Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / should i change vet
- By Guest [gb] Date 26.05.04 09:55 UTC
i am very upset after a trip to vets this morning for innocs for 13 week old chi.
i was given a sheet from my breeder with 4 small meals daily and chicken scraps in evening. dried food to graze through day .although milk not water was on list . fair enough i didnt think milk was better than water but it was just prefered.i wanted to change food to natures way or something similar.so my vet asked to see list from breeder. he then gave me a right telling for giving what was on list.he said amount was too much 3 meals is enough. milk is a no. no. and dogs got sick on these crazy . non additive foods. he said, its a dog not to spoil it and i these people are well meaning but they are killing their dogs.i said my breeder has been going for thirty years.she has old dogs too. i was so distressed when i left.not to mention the jab ordeal. on way out the girls working there couldnt even raise a smile.they didnt make eye contact and on my form they had written female. he is a male. so his bits went unchecked. am i o.reacting  is this what a vet is usually like.

Hi Guest

Your message is somewhat difficult to read but I gather your vet wants your dog fed dog food and not pampered ?

As we don't know exactly what happened it would be difficult for anyone else to really advise on whether you should change your vet - why not pop in again and say you were upset and ask talk it though with them now you have had time to think it over.

You should never come away feeling so angry and upset.  Even, if your vet does disagree with what you are feeding your pup, the way it seems he spoke to you is not on.  He should be able to make suggestions diplomatically.
We changed vets after a horrible experience several years ago, when my cat was put to sleep and it was returned to me (then 15) in a bin bag!
If your vet speaks to you or treats you badly, don't give them your custom.

I think lots of Vets have a bit of a "God" complex - they are the supreme beings who know all and can not be questioned.  As a breeder one of my biggest bugbears is vets giving inapropriate advice to new puppy owners!  They are often all to keen to talk people into changing foods,  often becasue they sell them themselves!  And they rarely have the specialist knowledge about the breeds needed.  Chis are tiny pups and certainly still need 4 meals at this age!  A natural diet is recomended by many vets too, not everyone approves of prrocessed foods for dogs!  Why not talk to your breeder if she is in your area, and ask which Vet she uses?  If not local to you perhaps she can contact fellow Chi enthusisatis close to you for advise on a vet with some knowledge of the breeds special requirements.  When I got my first Pug and took her to my vets, she was the first Pug registered there, and the Vet did a lot of research on the breed, to satisfy her own curiosity and to have some in depth knowledge (she also knows my compulisve tendnecies, and with one pug on the ground knew more would be appearing in the family soon!)

change if your not happy , after all these vets arent running a free service are they so they should be offering advice not giving you ear ache .
Id write a letter to the vet telling him the way he treated you was out of order and mention that he couldent even find the right sex of your pup ,say you will be searching for a more understanding vet . and do so , if these vets arent told what they do wrong they will just end up doing what ever they like to anyone .
I think you got  bad service for your money . there are alot of vets who think there god but there are plenty of nice ones out there it may just take a bit of time to find one ask other dog owners in the area if they know of a good one .

I had a vet who I was already annoyed with his service with my dog but he  couldent even see my cat had a twig in its chin even when i told him he said it was a marking  he was rude and so was his staff , I just dident go there again went to another vet who took it out , but word of mouth is the best way to see what vets are out there and in my hairdresser's i mentioned how badly treated i was...
there were 3 women in there mad about the service the got too and i passed my new vets on :) so word of mouth can work both ways ;)
Oh i did write to him :) got a very rude letter back , obviously his skills werent good enough to treat the animals ;)

I'd change...don't like that vet's attitude. I agree, that milk can give diarrhea, but other than that, chicken is fine, but I think a small breed puppy kibble (premium food) is better because it will be balanced and have very important vitamins and trace minerals etc in it. I don't know if you have the same brands there or not. I did some serious research on diet and foods and a few goods ones here are Canidae, Chicken Soup for the puppy Lover's Soul, (weird name) Wellness, Nutro. That's a few.

And having Chihuahuas, I know that they can be prone to hypoglycemia if they get hungry at all. Four meals is good. It doesn't matter how many meals you feed as long as it's not so much that they get too fat. But having empty tummies for too long is NO good.

Yeah.....I wouldn't go to a vet with such an attitude....unless you think he's really good medically. I probably still wouldn't.

Oh....edited because I read again that you were feeding kibble, but the chicken was more like a snack. That sounds yummy to me.
