how do you prevent it?

I heard of putting the meals, in kongs, so the dog couldnt wolf it down?

I think that's a little extreme and not much fun for the dog. They're designed to eat their meal all at once. However, some ways that can help are to feed two meals a day (if it's an adult) and don't allow hard, rip roaring exercise for two hours after they eat and one hour before they eat. Don't let them drink a ton of water right after eating. A little is fine. Same after strenuous exercise. This can help but it can happen sometimes for no apparent reason. I don't think a whole lot is known about it. Some breeds are more susceptable, deep chested breeds.

I have lost a dog to bloat, as a search on champdogs will show. I honestly feel that GDV/Bloat is not something that can be prevented. There are routines that can be adopted to minimise the risk, but you can't 100% say that now you've done X or Y, that bloat won't happen. I took all the precautions and made them my normal routine. One of my Irish Setters bloated 3 times very badly, and the other one never has. What will be will be.
