I paid for an irish setter puppy, and went to pick him up today, when i got there and picked my boy, the breeder explained how someone had pulled out of buying this bitch puppy, she then asked if i wanted to buy the bitch aswell, I wanted to say yes, as we were planning on getting another when the boy was older, but asked the breeder if i could think about it.

So i have til tomorrow to decide whether to get the girl aswell, paddy the boy is now home, and im thinking it will be so nice to get her aswell, they will keep each other company.
And plus i dont have to go through the dreaded puppy and teenager period again when paddy is older!

What do you guys think?

Two puppies is not double trouble but treouble squared, and shouldn't be even contemplated except by the most experienced dog owners who are good trainers.

The pups will need to be trained and socialised seperately (so twice the work) will be more likely to find each others company fulfilling than trying to work out what these humans want.

They will become very attached to each other and there will be problems when they have t9o be parted (like when the bitch is in season).

I have five dogs, but would never contemplate having less than two, andpreferably 3 years between each.

Others may disagree, but generally this will be the majority experience.

I wouldn't advise it. I had litter mates once. Never again. It is NOT just twice the work, but FOUR times as bad. The pups will bond together instead of with you. You will have to take them out for walks separately, as well as together. You will have to train them separately, as well as together. It will take longer to house train them. You won't KNOW which of them is peeing and/or pooing in the house so you won't be able to watch them closely. You will have to learn each pups mannerisms which is more difficult when there is more than one. When one has to go out by itself the other could get separation anxiety. Sorry if it seems that I'm putting a dampener on it, but I wouldn't consider selling 2 pups from the same litter together. It's not fair on anyone involved. Except the breeder, who doesn't have to re-advertise.

I would wait until your pup is 18 months old at least before adding to your household. Tempting though it seems at the moment.

Done it once and NEVER again!!!!!

Two puppies will mean double trouble, they will edge each other on and training will be very hard!!!!

This is true, but having two dogs of the same age is no a good idea, you can't get on top of them as much.

We had two pups that we bred, also 4 people all who train living with the dogs, with one more from "ouside house" and it was extreamly difficult. They edged eachoher on so much...We now always wait untill the youngest is at least 18 mths before getting he next one.  This way they are normally trained by that age!

I would also be wary of any breeder willing to sell two pups.  Especially if ones a bitch and the other a dog...have you considered what you will do about seasons???

All the above is MY opinion and at the end of the day it is up to you.

I'm afraid that I too agree with all the other posters - having two pups is far more than double trouble!

We kept two out of our litter - ane believe me, it's not something that I will do again.   They are both lovely dogs (well dog and bitch) and we are very pleased with them and love them dearly - but it has really been hard work with three people working with them - you have to train each one separately - and then go over it all again - and again - and again.

If you get two kittens, they are company for each other, play with each other, but still come to you for companionship.    If you get two puppies, they are company for each other, play with each other - and bond with each other to the extent that makes it very difficult for ech one to bond with you.    Two puppies can also wreck havoc in a quarter of the time that one puppy can, as well!!

Your breeder may well say that she has had no trouble keeping two - but this breeder would say "not on your life!!"

Margot

I kept two puppies from a litter, and would never again do it through choice. Lindy Lou and ice queen have said it perfectly. It is a nightmare. I'm surprised a reputable breeder would even suggest it.

I agree and have done the same as you Jeangenie....it was more than double the work and I never advise anyone who buys a pup from me to by 2 from the same litter I always say keep in touch and see how you feel later on .....think thats fair...:)
