Tohme asked
<I often see the inbreeding co-efficient on GSDs etc (particularly those from abroad) is this restricted to certain breeds or groups as I have never seen it in my breed? >
Hi Tohme, have started a new thread for this as the other one is not for discussion :)
I have not noticed any breeds particuarly that give inbreeding co-efficients/ It is just that because I am so interested in Dobermann genealogy and have the means to do it automatically I can work it out for any Dobermann I have enough ancestors for. Perhaps the ones you have seen also have someone interested in genealogy?

Hmmmm, they were advertising puppies or studs etc so I don't really know; I was just curious; seen it in GSDs in particular.
I wonder if there are enough GSD's around to get a really low inbreeding co-efficient or if they all go back to the same few dogs within 20 or so generations?

I had mine done on my Golden. Came back 0.0%
How many generations - it is easy to get 0.0% with three or four generations but I generally work on a minumum of 10 and often 15 or 20 generations
For instance my new pup is
Generations COI
3 0%
4 0%
5 1.15967%
6 2.44827%
7 4.04%
8 (complete) 4.73976%
10 (some missing) 6.73873%
15 11.2844%

Sorry for asking this but I have been trawling the net for 40 minutes and I can't find the answer to my question. What is inbreeding co-efficients?
Kate

If you type in Coefficient of Inbreeding into Google, you'll come up with masses. Or try 'inbreeding coefficient'. I always believed that you had to state how many generations you were dealing with to see the influence of a particular dog on the one you are interested in.
The maths are a bit complex.

One of the dog papers sometimes provides this info. with the Crufts winners pedigrees - it always fascinates me. I remember that the Yorkie, Ch Ozmillion Mystification had an extremely high coefficent, and all were Ozmillions too!

Ah that's what COI means! The Bullmastiff database nearly always has a COI percentage against each dog and I'd wondered for ages what it meant.
