I took my gsd pup to vets yesterday for a juvenile health check and the nurse asked if she had had her first heat. I was suprised at this question as she is only 5 months old. I was under the immpression that this would occur around 9 months of age, being later in a large breed. We go camping every weekend during the summer months and I don't want to get caught out. Do I really need to start checking her at this early stage? 

Hi, my sibe bitch came into season at 4 1/2 months old!!!!! so it is very much possible!

hi Gaby we were told that the average age was as you say 9 months onwards with her being a larger breed,but our GSD bitch Kira at 6 months give or take a day she had her 1st season, so i suppose it just depends on the dog HTH :-D

My son's GSD had her first season at 6months and has just had her second at 13 months,so I guess it can occur at any age.We are in the same position as yourself we have a Border Collie who is now 7months and no signs yet,so we are hoping it won't happen when we take her on hols.
