Depends how experienced the person doing the scanning is.
With my bitches 1st litter, roughly about the same amount of days as yours, I was also told there was no puppies and it was probably a phantom.
I new she was pregnant, or at least 99% sure.
She ended up having 6 puppies
So, no they are not always acurate, I'd get her done again in a week or so.
Hopefully You'll have better luck next time.
Michelle.

With Amber her First she was 28 days and even I could see the Puppies:)....But with her second time of Mating at 28 days there wasn't any thing and nothing happened, it is Possible it is a Phantom, one of ourother girls developed milk and every thing but nothing, I am so sorry if the Ultra sound is right. You could always get a second opinion:)
Julia i have PM'D you :0(

I would expect that any person able to scan should pick up pups at 35 days post whelping.
sorry - looks like she's missed :(
Hi Smudgely,i have noticed on previous threads that you are quite knowlegable when it comes to scanning bitches!!Do you think that maybe sometimes it would be harder to tell if the bitch had never had a litter before??After all when a bitch has had a litter previously does the uterus go completely back to normal or never quite the same as in us women lol?Which might make it easier to tell if there are any pups due to the increased size of uterus?Just wondering if this may be the reason that sometimes scanners miss these pups as it is not uncommon (according to a few people on here)for them to be told "no pups"only to go on and have the bitch whelp a few weeks later??Would be very interested in your opinion, thanks.

Hi jestony, what I have seen with the Ultra sounds is the only time they can miss a pup or two is if.....
1: The bitch hasn't emptied her bowl and there is shadows from the intestine...
2: If its to early to tell, but at 35days they would see for sure..
But apart from that you can see the pups if there is any. With Amber the last time we tired to breed her, at 28 days she had an Ultra Sound and you could Defiantly see no Pups..So it was a miss...It is very disheartening when this happens but there is always a next time:) we are going to try one more time with Amber when her Season comes along and if it doesn't happen well that's fine too:)
Hi Jellybean, thanks for that, that has clarified a few things.Do you think that when sometimes people say a bitch could be carrying high up under her ribcage and so pups could be missed on the scan this is a myth or not??My bitch is due to be scanned next wednesday at 32 days by the first mating and 29 days by the last, she missed on her last season and so i was hoping they may be able to tell if she is reabsorbing??The vet who is doing the scan doesnt think he will be able to tell if she is reabsorbing or not, thanks for your advice.
If your bitch is reabsorbing your vet should be able to see this. The puppies will appear white on the screen.
Does sound as though your bitch has missed... Sorry x

Well jestony, The Vet will scan up high in the ribs if they can not see any where they should be:)...at 29 days the pups will be visible and you will see them too:)....

The pups can be harder to see if the bitch is carrying them high near her ribs.
If she is resorbing them, the "resorbtion sites" can be picked up, if they are caught in time, they will show as similar to a pup, but grey / paler in colour & not as defined.

Hi Jestony, Quote "Do you think that maybe sometimes it would be harder to tell if the bitch had never had a litter before?? " - No, it really doesn't make any difference in my opinion, if she's a maiden or if she's had several litters.
the only reason people are wrongly told results from a scan is due to the lack of experience or incompetence of the person doing the scan. I admit it is very hard to accurately count all of the pups every time, but it is fairly easy for an experienced person to advise on approx. how many to expect.
I've said this many times on here, but the accuracy of the scan is purely down to the experience of the person using it. You will find that people who get their dogs scanned by people who usually scan sheep, are generally more accurate than most vets, this is because they are generally more experienced. Vets are very highly qualified people & I totally respect their knowledge, but sometimes things like scanning & AI are really very specialized & are sometimes better being done by someone who specialises in that.
Lets face it would we go to our GP for IVF treatment & let him/her carry out the procedures involved? probably not.
Hope this helps, smudgley. :)
Hi Smudgely, thanks for that, that was really helpful, hopefully then maybe sandridge's vet just missed them through sheer inexperience, fingers crossed.I am taking my girl next wednesday(day 32 at first mating)but my vets have not long had there machine so its all quite new to them, when i asked him (politely)how experienced he was he said well im in the process of scanning a bitch at the moment(whatever he meant by that?dont think he was doing it there and then lol)obviously they use the machine for other things and dont imagine they get many bitches in for pregnancy diagnoses. He also wouldnt commit himself with regards to picking up reabsorption sites saying "oh no i probably wouldnt be able to tell"so i agree it must depend on the experience of the scanner as to the reliability of the result.Still i shall find out on wednesday,OMG im a bag of nerves thinking about it,lol, thanks again for the advice.

jestony
Can't you go to an experienced Vet who has the Knowledge of Scanning?, I know I would, I think I would rather know for sure then have a Vet who is still in the Process of Learning to use the Scan!!, I know they need the experience, But I think I would rather know for sure then have them guessing..
Jellybean, yes your are right i would have liked to have done that but as far as i know there arent any in my area.I dont mind travelling a bit but Jade isnt the best of travellers and so would rather not have to take her on a long trek.If any one knows of an experienced scanner in the south of england then i'd be greatfull, also i would like to see a canine reproduction specialist but again the only one i know of is quite a bit up north, thanks anyway Jellybean.
where abouts in the south are you ? i know an excellent one.
Emma :)

Friend of friend was told by the vet that her girl wasn't pregnant, so they never got anything prepared. She gave birth to 14 pups earlier this week!!

Krys, If I were you - I'd tell your friend, to tell her friend to change their vet. ;) :D
