hi my dogs produced a healthy litter of 8 pups 18 months ago.my bitch is in season and i was hoping to breed again this time.about 4 days my dog was trying to mount the bitch but she wouldn`t allow it and now she seems ready but the dog is just sniffing about not reallly showing much interest.any ideas why this is happening.

She's not ready!  You can get a premate test done at your vets, cost around £20, it can tell you how far off ovulation she is, even though your girl is standing, flagging whatever, it doesn't mean she's ready.........you have to trust your stud dog, he knows best!

How many days is she?  Is the dog with her all the time?  I wdn't worry as they can be mated up to 20 days from coming into season, my Spanish are usually ready on the 18th day.

she is day 12 and the dog is usually with her all the time but i have been seperating them.Last time they mated on day 9 .

She may not be ready, my girl is day 17 and still not, we have been having her premate tested every 48 hours since day 11 - the day she was mated last time........when first tested she was C1,, not ready,,  Saturday she was C2,, which means she could be 4-6 days away from ovulating,, tomorrow we are taking her for another test,, fingers crossed she'll now be C3,, which is when we have 48 hours to get her mated............which means she could be days 18 or 19.  We've been back to the stud dog and although he's showing interest now, he's still not 100%, so fingers crossed for tomorrow!

You may just find he doesn't want to mate her. I beleive it is not uncommon for dogs living together not to mate.

Yes that is True I have heard that before...:)

This is true, my friend owns a stud dog, when we took our girl for mating a couple of years back, because she was bred by the stud dog owner, he just wasn't interested - I think he just thought of her as his friend.......lol.  We took her straight to another stud dog and he was fine with her

But a note for all of those who don't wish to breed and have both male and female dogs : DO NOT TAKE THIS FOR GRANTED.  Lots of dogs are eager to mate any bitch, whether they live together or not!
