Hope you guys can advise. Fry was spayed when we got her due to Oscar our complete Afghan Male. We were told of the side effects one of which was possible leaking after sleeping but it would not happen until she was a lot older. Well over the last few months we have noticed that after lying on her bed sleeping she has literally 'wet the bed' A few weeks ago she was asleep on the sofa with me and somebody knocked at the door, she jumped up and I noticed dribbles all over the sofa.
Last week she went to the vets for her jabs and Paul mentioned what had been happening. We have taken a urine sample which we will drop in tomorrow however she has been prescribed Propalin syrup. If it works the vet advised she may have to be on it for life. We haven't started it yet however the side effects can be aggresion (Fry is the most non aggresive dog I know) headaches, hypertension etc...........
So do we try it or leave well alone which we are quite happy to cope with as we would hate to give her anything to alter her perfect temperament. It is not an issue and we would rather have a happy Lab with a weak bladder than a dry bitch who may suffer drastic side effects.
Fry is 4 by the way.
Thanks guys
p.s. we were told when we bought her she had already had her first season so we should be ok to get her spayed.

I'm sorry Lisa, It's not a problem I've ever really had. Both Mandy and Kate were spayed late in life for medical reasons and never had a problem. Beth was spayed early when she went epileptic and because of all the problems I had at the time I had Lucy spayed early as well (Both of these were around 2 years of age). The only one to have any problems at all was Lucy and that was only during the last couple of years and only a very occasional dribble at that. I just put it down to plain old age, she was getting a bit strange by then anyway. I'd be interested in the urine sample Lisa, I cant help wondering if there is another reason? Yes, I know it can happen but it's not something which in my experience happens very often.
Sorry I'm not more use Lisa.
Best wishes, John

Lisa a friend at work has a Black Lab with this problem, she was spayed and all was well until she jumped into a pond and ripped her tummy on barbed wire. The rip was not very deep..not deep enought to effect bladder muscles..however soon after this she started having little leaks the vet is not sure why thinks it might be trauma. She is on medication and it seems to work without visible side effects. Hope all goes well with your dog :-)

Hi,
I have had that very same problem with Cody my 3yr old GSP. She started dribbling her bed after her morning walk so much so that it was wet through. This wasn't consistent and she could go for a week or so dry then it would return 2 days in a row. When I contacted the vet he was quite perplexed as to why this was happening in such a young bitch and although her urine sample was clear he at first treated her for cystitis. When this was to no avail (and after seeking some help on this site), I took her back to the vet and he gave her a course of drugs to boost her estrogen level and this has seemed to do the trick (so far!). This sounds exactly like Fry's problem and Cody too was spayed after her first season.
I hope this helps Lisa.

Think some of the problem is that owners and vets think a bitch is mature after their first season they are not, spaying after the 3rd or even 4th would be better. Even with late spaying this problem can happen but it is less likely.

Thanks guys seems we are not the only one to have encountered this problem. We have dropped her urine sample in today so will see what comes back from that. Hers however is inconsistent some days she is fine and others her bed is soaking. We will try the Propalin as the effects should be seen in a few days and see how we get on. I'll keep you all posted.
