Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Constapation - cures?
- By dvnbiker [gb] Date 16.05.04 16:44 UTC
Anybody have any ideas as I think my older BC is a little constapated.  He needs to lose a little bit of weight so is currently on Burns chicken flavour and naturediet lite diet and burns in the evenings.  He was regular as clockwork but now is only about once a day.  Any ideas of anything that might help?

By the way it has only been like this for about two days.

I would think rather than being constipated your dog is using more of the food hence less waste, If you fed a food with lots of "filler"the waste would be more. Also if he is effectively on a diet he will using more of the content of the food so again less comes out the other end

He would not be going at were he constipated

If the dog is not straining to go then there is not problem, if he is straining or the stools are smeared with blood then try a tablespoon of Liquid Parafin for a couple of days.

Goats milk is great for this - not the shop version - but the unpasturised milk. I've got one bitch that gets constipated after bones so I give her half a pint of goats milk and she' back to her old self. She OK if she just sticks to her own bone but she has a tendancy to nick the others.

We found out by chance, not sure if it was a good or bad thing to discover though, that tuna in sunflower oil works wonders on our B.C.! She wasn't constipated but she was certainly 'loose' after a treat on this tuna :D

yes, i too put about a tsp. of olive oil on eli's food sometimes.  not only will it help with consitpation, but will also improve is skin condition.  i use olive oil, though, because i find it to be a healthier oil than the others.

Actually the healthiest oil for both dogs and humans is in fact fish body oils as it is rich in vital Omega 3s which both our diet and that of our dogs are deficient in.  Its DHA/EPA is important in anti inflammatory effect and also correct brain function
