Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / corgi labour delay

Hello, my corgi started labour last pm and at about 8am today she had the first pup, a male. within about 2-3 hours later three more pups arrived. total two males and two females. its now half past eight at night and she is still having contractions. i am certain that she has at least one more pup inside. this is her third litter, the other two were brief 2 hours maximum to deliver 5 and 3 pups for each respective litter. i find the current progress rather odd. i should mention that she was mated on two occasions 1 day apart. is this kind of delay normal? do seperate successful matings equal seperate whelping events?

I think once labour starts thats it, they don't whelp days apart, which is why they say not to mate too far apart as once the pups start to arrive if you had had her mated 7 days apart the pups conceived later would be born too early.

I would say if nothing has happened you need to contact your vet ASAP!

Good luck

Hi sharonM,around 9 this morning she had a stillborn female. it's afternoon now and there is still one more pup to come. this makes it almost 2 full days.  No contractions now. i'm trying to locate my vet.

well, the vet tried to execute a forceps delivery but this failed. in addition to the pup being enormous it was positioned askance the cervical opening. she is now resting after an emergency cesarean section.

Hope that you dog and the surviving pups do well.  I saw someone yesterday whose dog took 3 days to have 9 pups and she was only mated once!!  I would of taken her to the vets myself.  Only one has survived, two were born alive and the others were all dead.

Fingers crossed for my Carina now who has been scratching and wripping papers since 12 am and has now decided to go to sleep, looks like it's going to be  a long day !
