Does anyone have any idea how long a bitch has a blood/discharge after a caesarean.
My bitch had one 10 days ago, and she still has a discharge. She hasn't got a temperature. and the discharge doesn't have a smell.
My vet was going to put her on antibiotic's, but I didn't like the idea, since she is feeding her pup.
Michelle.
I think it can last the same amount of time as VD's which would be an average of seven weeks or so

Hi Kerioak
So you don't think there is the need for antibiotic's.
Michelle.
Hi Michelle
I would tend to follow my vet's advice on something like this but in my experience a bloo*dy discharge is not unusual after a caesarian - the womb still has to clear itself out - you and your vet can see the amount and colour

When she had the caesarean, I was told she might bleed from the back end for a few days.
If it had been a normal birth I would of expected it for a few weeks, but took my vets word that it would only be for a few days, he obviously is wrong.
He didn't see the discharge, only went by my word.
The reason I declined from letting her have a course of antibiotic's, is I personally didn't think he had a clue.
When I said about the discharge, he took her temp, which was fine, then said I'll put her on antibiotic's in case she's got an infection. When I queried it saying was it safe while she was feeding pup, he mumbled something about, it not stating you couldnt, then said he'd double check (you'd think he'd know)
When he came back, he just repeated himself, then said but if your not happy we'll forget it. That was it, he said nothing about coming back at a later date or anything. So I left.
Ill just leave it for a while and see if it starts to dry up.
Michelle.
My bitch had a bloody discharge for about 11 - 12 days after her c-section earlier this year. After about a week I took her to see my vet who confirmed that all was well. He told me that I needn't worry as long as the blood is dark and looks old, you only need to worry if it has offensive smell or looks to be bright red (looking like fresh blood) or alternatively the bitch appears to be ill. She never appeared to be ill and the discharge cleared up on its own.
I wouldn't go for antibiotics unless you really feel she needs it because she is appearing to be ill

Hello Mitch,
I've popped over the road and spoken to a neighbour whose bitch had aC section 3 weeks ago and she said the same as Fleetwood really her vet(which is mine too) told her unless the discharge has an offensive odour or looks bright red - or she's worried the bitch is acting oddly. Then she would not need antibotics.
