Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Problem with leg cocking
- By pollen [gb] Date 13.05.04 11:35 UTC
Hi wonder if any one has any ideas, I have a cav and a havanese, who are the best of friends. However the Cav which we have had for years has started cocking his leg in my bedroom for what I can see is no reason at all. First thought was because the Havanesse is still new to our family three months and had not been snipped. He now has been but Taffy still insists on cocking his leg. Hubby is now now getting very annoyed. Also Dougal (the Hav) 10 months is clean all day but still wetting at night. But who know it might be Taffy doing that as well, to get Dougal into trouble. Any ideas please.

Taffy wouldn't be doing it to get the other dog into trouble - dogs don't think like that........  Hoever, they do use their urine to mark their territory, and he may well be doing to to ensure the other dog knows it's HIS place.  Keeping the bedroom door shut would be a good management solution to the problem.  Being dry at night is a different ball game to during the day - it's easy during the day to alert your owners to the fact you want to go out - but the same signals often aren't seen (or heard) at night.  Besides, night time training comes as much with age and maturity as training.  How have you trained them this far?

Taffy was already trained when we got him, as he was from the Cavalier rescue. Dougal had been retained my his breeder to show, however his second testicle never dropped, so we were able to purchase him as all we wanted was a pet. I have been taking him out into the garden at regular intervals, staying with him and telling "to be quick" which has worked great so far. Are you saying that Taffy might be weeing on top of Dopugals wee?  To show him his place.I do try and keep the door shut, but unfortunatly the children don't always remember. Just wondered why it was no where else in the house. Particulary annoying as I have foolishly just had a white carpet fitted in there. Thanks for your help

Dougal may not be weeing there at all. Bedrooms smell very strongly of their owner, and so, to a dog, are very high status places. Taffy may well simply be leaving his mark there to let Dougal know that he (Taffy) doesn't want to be driven out of his own territory by a newcomer. I would guess he isn't yet completely settled with another dog in the house.

I sympathise with your problem, but the first idea to put right out of your head is that Taffy is doing it 'to get Dougal into trouble'. Taffy may be doing it, but he will not be doing it for so complex a reason as to get the other dog into trouble! Dogs simply don't think like that. To find out for certain which dog is wetting at night I would suggest you crate them separately at night - the one with the dry bed will be the innocent party!

I'm no expert, but I would hazard a guess that Taffy is still unsettled about having another dog in the household, and is trying to make sure the 'interloper' (in his eyes) knows that he (Taffy) has a right to be there too. He is marking the favoured territory as being his. It can take some weeks after castration for a dog to stop smelling 'male', and maybe when this has happened with your new dog Taffy won't feel the need to stake his claim so much.

The easiest way to prevent this happening is to deny both dogs access to your bedroom. However many people like to have their dogs in their room, so maybe you won't want to do that. Is there are particular area of your room where he cocks his leg? If so then make sure you clean the area very well with a solution of biological washing powder and a wipedown with surgical spirit to remove any lingering scent (that the dog can still smell, even though we can't) that is encouraging him to use the same place. Don't use anything containing ammonia because this will only encourage repetition.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, I suppose when I think about it Dougal was only done ten days ago. So it is still early days. I will try your biological washing powder and white spirt suggestion today. Strangly Taffy only does it in our room and as soon as he can get up stairs after us getting up. thanks for your help

I had that problem with bailey. He is kept downstairs got upstairs on a couple of occasions, jumped on the bed and peed. The next time he tried to poo yet he doesn't pee or poo in house at all now. When I bath him now I make sure all the doors to bedrooms are closed. Good luck.
