Topic Dog Boards / Health / Womb Infection?

I took my bitch to the vets on Monday as that morning she had started trying to wee constantly, even though nothing was coming out after the first go.  She also had a white discharge.  The vet thinks it is a womb infection, but isn't 100% sure what it is.  She is on antibiotics at the moment and I've to take her back tomorrow, when the vet will decide whether to go ahead and dress her.  She is still acting the same today and won't eat her normal food, so have been feeding pasta, etc as she has lost a lot of weight and I'm trying to keep her strength up.  She is very tired also.

She has had a couple of false pregnancies in the past but only to the extent that she was feeling off her food, tired and her milk glands swelled.  Now I'm wondering if it is another false pregnancy but she is just showing different signs, as this is approx 8-9 weeks after her season.

Has anyone had any experience of these symptoms or any idea what the problem could be?  Any advice would be appreciated, from me and Tia.

Hi Briela, a womb infection, known as pyometra, is a very serious infection. The symptoms are exactly as you describe, and you did the right thing in taking you bitch to the vet. It can be an open (discharging) or closed (no discharge, and more dangerous). I lost a bitch years ago, to pyometra, so keep up the vet treatment. Hysterectomy isn't always neccessary, but I think I would choose it under circumstances like this.

Best wishes,
Dawn R.
