Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Does anyone have a bitch in whelp???
- By stephanie1964 [gb] Date 12.05.04 12:54 UTC
This may sound really stupid but i am trying out a theory! i have been reading past posts on testing to see if a bitch is in whelp using a pendant or ring.. If the bitch is in whelp it would swing side to side if not in whelp it will go in a circle.. The reason being i had my girl scanned but the scan says not, which i didn't believe so was looking on here for phantom pregnancys etc, so having done this ring test it says she is in whelp. So can everyone who thinks or knows there bitch is in whelp try this out and let me know PLEASE. I have tried it on my girl who i know isn't in whelp and that goes in circles so it is correct on her, also on my son so i do know that he is a boy lol, and my sis tried it on a bitch that whelped last week and that goes in circles as it should. So circle for a girl, side to side for a boy or bitch in whelp. I would love to go back to my vet next week and tell him why i want a rescan just to see the look on his face if this proves correct. Many thanks Steph.....    PS i cant wait for my other children to get home from school to try it on them  LOL

Hi Steph

Try it out on inanimate objects to see what sex they are as well - it works on them.  I used to try it out on eggs to see if they were fertile before I had a candler and unless you put your hand in a vice it works on everything :D

Hi,i have a bitch who hopefully is in whelp and so i am willing to give it ago.Can it be any ring or does it have to be a wedding ring which i have heard about before for pregnant women to see if they are having a boy or girl?Dont think i'll be able to get my wedding ring off, havent tried for  years lol but sure i can borrow one.

Hiya

I wouldn't put too much stock into this theory. My mother was very into this kind of thing and wrongly diagnosed the sex of both my girls lol. Mind you I'm not too sure about hospital scans either. The person who scanned me said I was definitley having a boy, we decided on a few boys names. After the "Labour" was over, the midwife announced I had a beautiful wee girl. I argued with her and told her she was wrong as I was meant to be having a boy  :)
I decided I didn't want to know what sex my next pregnancy was lol.

well just curious, as i cant see how my girl could have missed she had 3 ties, and showing all the signs of being in whelp.. It will be interesting to see from the second scan next week...

How far gone is she stephanie?Bitches can miss for all sorts of reasons (although i hope this isnt the case for you)and they can show all "signs"too only to fail to produce pups at the end of it : (they can fool even the most experienced breeders.I just tried this ring test on my bitch and it did swing side to side, but she was licking it and trying to bite it lol,im afraid im a bit of a sceptic on things like this but im going to try it on my kids now lol, will let you know the result.Huh,im not gonna bother trying these smiley face things any more, lol.

Taken from 1st mating she would be 32 days, but done over a 4 day period. and yes i do understand they can miss or have phantom pregnancy's. I am very curious as to what the results would be with other peoples bitches in whelp or not sure. i will have her scanned again next friday just to be sure as she also has a rash the vet thinks its an allergy has been on 2 lots of antibotic's but hasn't worked, i dont want to give her steroids untill i am 100% sure she isn't in whelp. I find it really freaky that the ring is going side to side instead of in a circle, i have tried it on all my children and it does what it is supposed to do circle for a girl and side to side for a boy, and i know my bitch is a bitch lol so why is it going side to side on her??? I read from a previous post that farmers used to do this test on eggs to see which were male and female. And i do know that scans can also be very wrong, as my other girl was scanned 1st vets saw 2 pups 2nd scan showed 5! she went on to have 2 and only 2 still born pups, not through me not keeping the vets informed as to my concerns i might add, i feel that if i had know only 2 pups things would have turned out different...
PS i have now opened up a can of worms as to this ring test the kids have now started going round to see what are F or M  LOL

Of course things are much easier in France and other countries as inanimate objects do have a gender! Unlike in English. :D

Hi Steph,
I believe it could well work.  When I was expecting my first child, my friend told me about using a needle on a piece of cotton - which would swing from side to side if a boy (which was right!), and I tried the same with the next two, who were both girls, and the needle moved round in a circle.  It's something to do with a magnetic field that we all have, and animals as well of course!  My friend knew, because years ago, before all this new technology, her father when working as a farmer, used to sex the eggs using this method.  And it definitely isn't because anyone is moving their hand!

Today i thought i would try doing the test on different area's of her tummy, where the whelps would be! and it goes side to side on some and circles in others...Couldn't you all just try it just for fun??? Steph

Hi Stephanie im sorry to hear about your lost litter down to the vets negligence,i know what vets can be like, you try your hardest to tell them things and explain what you think could be wrong and they look at you as if to say "what the hell do you know about this im the one with letters after my name"sort of thing but the truth is in my experience i have found vets to know very little about reproduction in dogs, especialy when things get tecnical, you should of seen me trying to explain to my vet the other day about canine herpes virus which up until a while ago was little heard of but is now thought to be the main reason for fading puppies, still births and bitches missing and so on.She just kept laughing and brushing every thing off,but i have spent hours on the computer researching it,she ended up taking a blood sample from my bitch after speaking to the lab as they advised a test be done as she missed last time but as i tried to explain the test should be done nearer to whelping time and doing it now was pretty pointless.Anyway the result came back the next day and they said it proved that she definately wasnt fighting off this virus so she hasnt been exposed to it recently, but to be honest from what i,ve read im not sure if im any the wiser.

Anyway getting back to your "pregnancy test"lol i tried this on my daughter and 2 of my boys, and it was right, circled for a girl and went side to side for the boys(they looked at me like i was completely mad, there probably right lol),but im not sure if i was subconsciously making it do it lol, anyway i'll find some more "guinea pigs" to try it on and let you know.

I tried this when I was pregnant, and to avoid there being any accidental human influence I suspended my ring on a long piece of thread from the central light fitting, and lay down with the bump just underneath it. Nothing. Not a twitch. (Of course gold, being one of the most stable and non-reactive elements, wouldn't be affected by magnetism, so maybe I should have tried something containing iron, such as a steel needle.)

Hi, thanks for trying it out... I have booked for her to be scanned next wed. Not at the vets but someone who scans all the time, it's only costing £20 or if i wanted her scanning again an extra £5 so very good price and at least i will know for sure this time. So now i cant wait till next week,,lol

Vets can get scans wrong!

My friend had her Boxer bitch scanned at the vet, he told her no, no pups not pregnant etc.

This surprised her as she thought she saw something on the scan as did the vet nurse.
The bitch was acting like she was inwhelp...little things that her owner noticed.
Well her owner felt sure she was in whelp!
To cut along story short the bitch whelped a litter of 4 pups!!
She felt quite smug ringing up her vet to tell him he'd got it wrong and that his vet nurse and
herself were correct!
The bitch hid the pups up in her ribs so you couldn't tell until 7th week as she looked an odd shape
viewed from the front, she didn't drop the pups into the 'normal area' until the last week of pregnancy.
