Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Pregnant - Upset Tum?

For the past week my bitch who is now half way through which I am fairly sure is a pregnancy had an upset tum.  She wasn't sick and didn't go off her food but had diarrohea for a few hours.  I fed her only rice for 24hrs (I would normally starve her but didn't like to in the circumstances) and everything got better but not right.  She has never messed in her run ever, but over the past week she has been doing about 6 lots of putty like poo every night!  There is no mucous or anything untoward and she isn't distressed, off her food or showing any sign of anything abnormal.  She doesn't seem too bad during the day but she has three walks and both my dogs are quite good at utilising this to do what they need to do.

She has never had any sort of upset with her digestion before - never.  I am reluctant to change her diet at this stage.  My gut feeling is that this is down to the pregnancy.

Any ideas anyone?

Hi Jackyjat,my bitch,if pregnant will be 3 weeks on friday and she had some really sloppy poo last week, like yours though was well in herself. If i remember rightly from previous pregnancies, they can be a bit loose sometimes, probably due to all the changes going on in there bodies, hormones and the ever expanding uterus to mention a few.As long as she isnt listless or anything and is fine in herself and the diarhea doesnt continue too long, then i wouldnt worry too much but keep a close eye on her which i suspect you are doing anyhow.Loose poo doesnt always mean diarhea as poo can come in lots of consistencies lol,and you usually know if its diarhea from a bug or something as it has its own certain sourish smell if you know what i mean.Hope this helps and i hope she is ok.

I had the same problem as well with one of mine. First time I have to say over the years my others didn't have the problem. As soon as she had them she was ok.

What I did was cook lots of chickens and gave them to her with mashed potato(no butter added!!) this was ok so I then gradually added Wafcol Salmon and Potato, this worked most of the time.

Oh good, that makes me feel a little better.  There have been no warning signs and nothing else to give cause for concern.  I shall just make sure I don't shut her in anywhere for too long!

Well another week has passed and we've still got the same 'problem' ongoing and I am a bit concerned that I might not be doing the right thing.  She is going quite a few times a day and it's still putty like ( sorry!)  No mucous, no blood, no nasty smell (other than what you would expect from poo!).  She is drinking, has an appetite, wet nose and no other worries.

I am giving her rice daily with a little bit of chicken with egg and spreading out her biscuits so she doesn't gulp a whole bowl at once.  I do need to start thinking about increasing her food intake at this stage 5 weeks+ but would prefer to get what goes in to stay a bit longer first!  I am also worried that all this variety in her diet might not be doing her any good.  Normally I would starve her for 24hrs then give her rice and chicken before moving onto biscuits but I can't withold food from her at the moment, can I?

This could of course, be totally normal for a pregnant bitch.

had this problem, last year with both of my girls my vet told me not to increase the food until 6 weeks which i though was a little late , even the odd extra bickie isn't good which is hard when they look so hungry !!!! he told me (his Words) that more and more bitches have sections these days through over feeding and having big pups....and the resaon for upset tums in his opinion was to high a protien too early on ...don't jump on me now just what the vet said LOL  and i must admit I have carried on this time and fed no more and no different until a small increase at 6 weeks and again at 7 and so far no tummy problems ..... i must admit i did give a little extra last time odd bit of chicken here or there and extra bicky at bedtime etc.... thinking i was doing the right thing for her !!!!
