Has anyone imported a dog,if you have from what country and was it difficult to do it,did you go across and seek the dog,or did you ship across and pick up yourself from the airport.

I imported 4 with friends 12 years ago, we went over to see the dogs and then went again to pick them up, although we flew and in those days it was quarantine.

Now I'm off again in August but we will be driving to Spain to pick our dogs up.  My friends picked up one a few weeks ago this way.  If you want to ask any questions e-mail me and I'll pass it onto Lynn who recently imported a new dog as I'm sure that she'd be more than happy to help.  My e-mail is    spanishwaterdogs@supanet.com

We are in the middle of bringing in a Tibetan Mastiff from America she is comeing in on the pet passport all seems to be going well up to now, the micro chipping has been done, these had to be sent from this country as the Americans use a different one to the DEFRA approved, she has now had her Rabies jabs and we have to wait for the titre levels to be assesed, I am please that the breeder has been well up on what is needed. I have been so pleased by the ease of things so far I have paid the deposit on another puppy for next year.  I brought a Tibetan Mastiff in from France in 1992 and she was kenneled for the 6 months, she did do do well with it so we have waited for the alternative pet passport before trying again. I am going over in June to see her, but It is a good friend that has bred her and I know that she would not let any of her line come over into the country that was not top quality as it is a showcase for her breeding as she has never exported to England before.

Yes, brought a dog then a bitch in about 8 years ago, with quarantine, from the USA, and then one of our bitches who was visiting the USA was the first dog into the UK under Pet Passports from the USA when she returned.  All flew, of course.  Also partner just brought one back from Spain, driving.    Am now in the process of helping a friend bring  a youngster in from the USA too, all going OK so far, apart from failing the first blood test so having to repeat the Rabies Vaccination!Happy to give any help you need.

bye

Yes - am in the process of bringing one in from Italy - we are going to drive over for her when the time comes. Her passport documentation is ready now in fact but we are waiting for her to come into season as she is to be mated before she comes.  Typically she was due in April but came in in February (too early - passport not ready till last week) so we are now waiting for her next one!

So far it has been very straight forward. We visited several times over recent years to see the dogs and so were in a good position with the owner to buy this bitch when she became available (and we knew what was behind her having met many relatives!). The person we are getting her from speaks quite good English which helps as my Italian is not great! I drove over a couple of years ago with a friend to collect her dog also - came in on Passport also - it was amazingly easy - felt very weird driving off the train from France with a dog in the back!

I would say the most difficult part is not the logistics of getting the dog over but (if you are buying a dog) finding a someone willing to part with a good one. It takes time to build up relationships so that people know you are serious and are willing to help you get a good one.

Good luck.

My daughter imported two dogs about 2 years ago from Mozambique. She flew them to Spain where a friend has a kennel, and they sat out their quarantine there then came to Britain on the pet passport scheme.

We imported a Golden Retriever bitch from Finland on a pet passport on 30th April this year.
Everything went smoothly and she soon settled into our household with all the other dogs.
The main drawback with the pet passport is that the dog has to be at least 10 months of age to comply with the regulations and therefore you miss a lot of the pup's development.
A benefit of the scheme is that you get a ready trained dog which has already had preliminary hip checks and eye testing!

The most important thing is that you check and double check all the regulations and documentation. if there is any problems with the paperwork, the dog could be refused entry on a technicality.

We used Finnair to fly into Heathrow and they faxed copies of all the documents prior to the flight so that any possible irregularities could be corrected before the dog was put on the aircraft.
