I was walking through the Town with my dog the other day, a big yellow lab, when 2 men stopped to make a fuss of him.  One of them said "isn't he lovely" and the other one replied "yes they are lovely dogs those collies aren't they!!!"ha ha.......lab - collie.....mmmmm ..I think he was drunk!

Has your dog ever been mistaken for another breed?

This just made me laugh!
- By tohme Date 11.05.04 14:20 UTC
frequently, as I have a Long Haired Weimaraner!
- By ClaireyS Date 11.05.04 14:21 UTC
I used to walk a liver flatcoat who was always mistaken for a Irish (red) setter, after this one passed on the owners got a black flatcoat and people used to say "oh look its a black red setter" I mean how dumb can you get.  Sometimes she was mistaken for a collie x too
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 11.05.04 14:24 UTC
blue roan working cocker spaniel = puppy english setter!  The person who first made that mistake told me about how she was a breeder of setters - very knowledgeable I'm sure.
- By BennyBoo [gb] Date 11.05.04 14:32 UTC
Black full grown Staffy = black lab puppy.  I looked at the woman and said "no, she's a Staffy and she's fully grown..."

Oh and my brother's white Staffy = dalmation puppy whose spots haven't come out yet.  That made me laugh, I have to admit.
- By labmad [gb] Date 11.05.04 14:36 UTC
LOL! what are people like??!!! :-D
- By Katie404 [ie] Date 12.05.04 13:32 UTC
Oh, that's so funny! I have a 15 week old black Staffy boy, and at LEAST 6 people have said: "What a lovely labrador!"
- By Staffie lover [gb] Date 12.05.04 21:39 UTC
when Leo was a pup ppl thought he was a Boxer
when i took him for his first lot of jabs the vet also thought he was a boxer
and said he was big for a boxer pup ;)
he was a 8 week old red and white with black mask Stafford
- By ELay [be] Date 11.05.04 14:35 UTC
Oh yes!

When my border terrier was a pup, we went to the vets and the VET said something about him being big when he gets older - I said 'what? he will only weigh about 8kg?' He though he was a German Shepherd puppy - the VET!

We have also got a German Shep and people always think he is the mummy and my border terrier is her puppy! hmmmm

Lots of people also comment on what a nice mix he is! And when the film 'Something about Mary is on TV' for months after people are always saying 'oh its the dog from 'Something about Mary!
- By GoldRush [gb] Date 12.05.04 11:32 UTC
I have two flatcoated retrievers im TOLD they are  irish setters lol , well the GP know best !
i must admit galaxy is a very rich liver colour, but liberty... a black, red, setter (?) (?)

Its so silly because i also have an irish setter!
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 11.05.04 14:35 UTC
Frequently ....... if I had a fiver for everyone who said how lovely my Shelties are (youngest girl is size of small horse!), I could go and buy a bl**dy Sheltie!!

One time when I was out with Penny, these two men walked past and one said to the other "Look at that Dobie! You don't often see a long-haired Dobie." while looking directly at Penny. How they mistook a Gordon Setter for a Doberman is beyond me.  But most people get it right or they ask me what she is.

Many people ask if Lucy is a Terrier or a Poodle or a mix of the two.  Most just ask what breed is she or what type of mix she is.

On the other hand, no one knows what Tamino is. Even though Tamino is a puppy he does look like the breed he is, a Swedish Vallhund.  Since getting him I have had two people complimenting me on my husky! One person was petting him and said "What a lovely German Shepherd, I have one at home"! Two people asked me if he was a Husky cross, another one asked me if he was a German Shepherd cross. The wildest one was a very macho guy, tatoos, earrings, nose rings, the whole nine yards.  He came over and asked where did I get my wolf!!  And that he is looking for a wolf that looks JUST like that, and could I give him the phone number of the person I got Tamino from!  Some people, eh.

                                                                                                                                     Kate
- By chaliepud [gb] Date 11.05.04 14:53 UTC
Most people either say what a lovely cross, or what is it!  Obi is an ACD and people either love him or are scared of him (7 month old softy!)
My XB bitch is so pretty and such a stunning brindle colour most people want to know what she is, I just wish I knew, I would love another, most people have an opinion as to what she is crossed with, from Staff to Boxer to Great Dane, in fact, it would make for a great thread if we could include pictures!
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:04 UTC
I had an argument with someone one day, my ped black lab has a white patch on his chest, this person said my lab was a border collie, i told him i would show him his papers and he said i dont care what they say he has got border collie in him

There is really no point in getting into conversation with people who "know better than you" as I have found to my cost.  I have been frequently told that there is no such thing as a LH weimaraner, that it is a "throwback", that you can't show them, that they are a cross breed etc etc etc............. (sigh)
- By archer [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:14 UTC
Yep...my elks are often called huskies, wolves,GSD.
The funniest one though was my red and white staff being called a rottie...mind you a close secomd was when the same staff(18 inches tall and weighed 28 Kg) was called a jack Russel!!
Oh boy..some people.
Mind you on the other hand I bumped into a lady with a dog yesterday...he was brindle and almost as big as a lab...looked like a lab/boxer/staff cross. The dog had a lab type coat and a long 'whip' type tail and was leggy like a boxer.I asked the lady if he had some boxer in him and she said 'no he's a pedigree long legged staff'...my a####!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kate  - it will only get worse!  trust me on this!

Our Valls have been - mini huskies,  baby wolves, mini shepherds and best of all, from a vet mind you - a german shepherd cross terrier "thing".

My Rough Collie x Golden has also been mistaken for an NSDTR and a Hovawart - both times by show people who couldn't believe that I had a cross breed and were convinced it must be a pedigree!!

- By tohme Date 11.05.04 16:07 UTC
My friends GS was called a LH Rottweiler!!!
- By Debs435 [gb] Date 12.05.04 11:28 UTC
LOL - know just what you mean!! I too have a Gordon, unlike you however, most people we have come across have no idea what he is - he was even accused of being a Rottie when he was only 16 weeks old!! I mean, long floppy ears, waggy tail - honestly!!! I have been stopped countless times by people in the street to ask what he is, especially now he is getting bigger ( now 7 months ) He has quite a fanclub where we live!!!!  He is going for a short holiday back to his breeder soon whilst we go abroad for a few days, and one of her other bitches has just had a litter of 11 pups!!! they will be a month old when we take Murphy to stay - how hard is it going to be not to bring one home when we go to collect him???!!!! wont though, not this time - two mental Gordon puppies at once a bit too much!!
- By KateL [ch] Date 12.05.04 12:56 UTC
Exactly!!  Rotties and Dobies look nothing like Gordons.  Maybe the similar color and identical markings throw them off. :D

I've almost forgotten what Penny was like when she was 7 months, that was almost 6 and a half years ago now.  Maybe another Gordon wouldn't hurt, just a little one.  :D What's the address of the breeder with 11 puppies? :D  Just joking, I have my hands full at the moment with Tamino, but maybe after a year or so.

The most offending remark I have ever had was when someone was walking past (Penny was about 4 months) and they said "What is THAT a mix of".
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:11 UTC
Hudson (2 and a half year old Malamute) was taken for an .....wait for it.....

IRISH WOLFHOUND

*sigh*

:p :p :p
- By KateL [ch] Date 11.05.04 15:38 UTC
Irish Wolfhound  HOW!
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 11.05.04 16:03 UTC
I have no idea
- By Camerons [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:13 UTC
The number of people that have called Alfie (black and white pointer) a dalmation is amazing.  He's not even particularly spotty.  To be fair though, I guess it is mostly kids.
- By BennyBoo [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:16 UTC
You can understand it if they're children...

One kid asked my brother "if you shaved all the hair off your dog, would she be spotty?"  (she has dark splodges on her skin but not through her coat)  I'm not entirely sure what my brother said back...
- By labmad [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:17 UTC
Hey Tohme there is no such thing as a long haired weimy!!! ha ha lol :-D :-D :-D
- By tohme Date 11.05.04 15:21 UTC
well her litter sister was recently re-classified as a weimaraner x collie in a WT write up!
- By Lokis mum [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:18 UTC
Well Thor is often mistaken for a Bernese Mountain Dog - admittedly he is a big Aussie, and his coat does curl .... and I cant even begin to count the number of times they are mistaken for border collies " - but what happened to his/her tail?"  In fact the owner of the stud dog we used now has the affix "notacolly" :D :D

It never happened with my Dandie Dinmont people either knew the breed (rarely) or never guessed she was a breed :)
- By BennyBoo [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:25 UTC
Dandie Dinmonts are very distinctive, though, aren't they?  I think they look fantastic, there's a dog with a sense of humour!
- By hippychick [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:27 UTC
white gsd at 6 months a wolf, reported to police and they stopped and asked me to produce evidence she was a white gsd.

- By labmad [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:32 UTC
No way ha ha!
- By Isabel Date 11.05.04 17:28 UTC
Humour is their greatest assett, BennyBoo ;)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 11.05.04 15:47 UTC
Countless times.  What is really annoying is the way people will say with utter asssurance to friend/child when they say what they think they are, rather than say "Oh I think it is x"

Mine are Elkhounds and I really get sick of the lame Husky comments. :(
- By Abbeypap [gb] Date 11.05.04 16:01 UTC
Try being in the showring with a black and white Papillon and the judge pointing to you and asking for the Pomeranian to come forward.
You can always tell who didn't read there standards the night before. lol
Or people in the street who ask what kind of Chihuahua it is.

Frequently with black Am. Cockers pups we get "oh look at the little poodle" type comments.  With the pugs its things like "ah, how sweet, a baby bulldog"  or Oh look, its the dog off the TV add (the noddy head bulldog!!!).  Of course, do get a lot of "its the Men in Black dog" too.  With the parti colour Am  Cockers most frequent comment is "my mum/aunty/neighbour" has one of those Cavaliers, just like yours" :)

We've had "is that an Irish Wolfhound" asked of our Spinoni   But more common is "what are they" :)  When we tell them we often get spaghetti "jokes". Other people have asked what our spaniels were crossed with!  But on the whole people love them, and are really interested in them, which is lovely!  We've even had someone jump out from the car behind us in a traffic jam and run up to our car.  That time I just wound down the window and said "Italian Spinoni" and the woman said "thank you, we were arguing about it" and ran back to her car :D
- By GreatBritGirl [gb] Date 11.05.04 16:34 UTC
everyone thinks leo the sheltie is a rough collie but guess that is an easy enough mistake to make but everyone who sees us always tells us how huge hes going to be
- By Blue Date 11.05.04 16:25 UTC
awww a little scottie dog !!!!!  for a westie. LOL
- By Gill W [gb] Date 11.05.04 17:01 UTC
On more than one occasion, my orange roan cocker has been called a cavalier x. Oh, and a "new coloured" springer
- By Carrie [us] Date 11.05.04 17:41 UTC
Those are all funny stories! Yes, me too. When my solid, blue grey Chi mix with partially floppy ears was younger people thought he was a Lab pup. I'd have to say as Jose was running along side me that if he were a Lab pup, he would have just been born to be that small and not this coordinated. LOL.

Then there's my Doberman. When I first got him at 9 weeks, he was about 20 + Lbs. He had enormous feet, even then, darn near what they are now. People would ask if he was a miniature Doberman (which there is no such breed) or they'd ask if he were a miniature pinscher which would have tiny feet and just tinier all over. LOL. Then when he got taller....someone asked if he was a Great Dane. He has also been mistaken for a black and tan coonhound. Good heavens. It's amazing that a Doberman Pinscher isn't more recognizable. I think he's getting the look now. Hee hee.

And lots of people don't know that Chulita is a Chihuahua. But interestingly, every child I run into knows that. "Oooohhh a Taco Bell dog...a Chihuahua" ....cute.

Bonnie, my Lab sometimes is mistaken for a Chessie. She really doesn't look like one, not as big, not the wavy hair etc. Funny....

Spanish Water Dogs, well what can I say,  it's a Bedlington or cross Bed.  and Old English, cross Springer and many many more.
- By moo [gb] Date 11.05.04 17:50 UTC
My Border Terrier is often mistaken for all sorts of things, a Griffin (not sure if thats how you spell it) and someone once asked me if she was a Healer and I havent got a clue what they look like.

- By Jenna-Cooper [gb] Date 11.05.04 17:50 UTC
Janska has been called an Akita, GSD, Wolf. Although people daren't come near her when they think she is a wolf. :-(

She is a Siberian Husky.

Jenna and Janska.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 11.05.04 18:39 UTC
I get Husky , wolf and Akita regularly ...most Malamute owners do :D

Oh yes...and SNOW DOG is a favourite :D
- By archer [gb] Date 11.05.04 17:54 UTC

- By beardiesokay [gb] Date 11.05.04 18:08 UTC
Frequently, Beardies are forever being called "Dulux" dogs (Old English Sheepdogs) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kay
- By Lea Date 11.05.04 19:35 UTC
Yep totally agree Kay.
My mums old Beardie was always called a Old English or a dulex dog. Even now when I see a Beardie and talk to the owners, they are shocked at the fact I know its a beardie and not an old English.
I dont know if any other Yankie owners have found this, but so far I have NEVER had My Am cocker mistaken for anything else, and only 1 person knew what breed he is!!!!!!!!!!!  They just normally ask what he is!!!!!!!
Although, I do get asked what my puppies names are....... Gemma is 7 and Beano is 2 1/2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lea :)

I am always getting told that my golden retriever is a lab, despite having the world's fluffiest tail!
Nobody even believes that megan is all border collie becuase she is quite small and short haired. Most people look and her and say, "there must be some border collie in her", I just want to turn round and say, "duh, its all border collie in her, shes a border collie", but i just smile and nod to be polite. Mind you when my agility instructor called her a little crossbreed, i was a bit annoyed, after all i had enrolled her as a border collie, and being so active in the dog world i would've thought she could tell!
