We would like to put our dog to stud (right terminology??)but haven't a clue how to go about this. Spike has an excellent pedigree and we would like to put him to stud before he gets too old.Great to hear from any one that knows and what are next step is.

What breed is Spike and is he a show dog or a working one, it makes a difference as to how you get started. You have made a start as you have joined rather that posting as a guest. So let us know the breed and what tests you have already done and we should be able to set you in the right direction. Have you spoken to his breeder, they will be able to let you know what bitches you should accept and those you should decline.

Enough for now come back and let us know the breed and how far you have gone in proving your dog and what testing results you have had.

Spike's a Staffie and we have unfortunately lost contact with his breeder. We have not even started any tests as we are unsure which ones he needs (eyes?) Spike is not a show dog. Hope this is helpful

Sorry to say there are loads of quality studs in your breed so I think you should start to show him if you want to start using him at stud, people need to see him and asses him before they will ask you if they can use him. It may also help to join one of the breed clubs. How old is he by the way.

Thanks for that information, we were hoping to get a pup from him, but how naive am I. He's too old I think to show him .....7yrs Sorry I didn't mean to waste your time but really appreciate your hints.

Hello.
I assume you want a pup from Spike because he has qualities you admire - well you may do better to look for a dog of similar breeding -even if you've lost touch with the breeder I assume you have a pedigree therefore I would have a look at any "affixs" in his pedigree. Names that are the same running through such as Raparee, Friarstaff, Chelmstaff, Ashstock etc before the name.
That will identify his breeding and point you into the right direction.

No problem but yes he is too old, but it is nice that you asked for advice and that is never a waste of time. He would still be able to perform but there are some set backs that you may not realise, his temperament may change, he may become dirty in the house, and try to escape if an in season bitch was in the area he may also become more aggressive to other males. You also have to consider that any pups produced would be equally your responsibility with the owner of the bitch that is liable in law as well as ethically. So love your boy as he is and if you want a puppy buy one in and let them take the responsibility for the pups. ;)

Why is he too old to show Jackie??.  He is only just a veteran.  The guest could start showing him at this age there is no age limit for showing.......is there?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 10.05.04 19:57 UTC
He's not really too old to start showing - but he is too old to sensibly start to use at stud.
:)

Molly JG has said it for me, the dog can be shown but by the time he has made a name for himself he will be using a bus pass. Too old to start a career as a stud, most start as soon as the hip scores are in, at about a year, having done well in the ring and proved they will be of benifit to the breed.

Sound advice thanks alot - think from whats been said I'll buy a puppy. Spike has amazing qualities but by the time his name is known we'll be applying for a bus pass never mind Spike.
So a hunting for a pup I go!

I would try to trace Spoikes breeder.  They may have bred on from his relatives, his Mum, Dad, or littermates, and you could get the type of puppy you admire.

If you look on his registration it will give his parents names.  If you put these in Google you may be lucky and either come up with MUm or Dads details,a nd of course their breeders contact info.

Also if you contact Staff breed clubs they may know of their owners if they are regular exhibitor breders, and pass a message on for you.

Jacquieozz, have to say it is really nice to have someone ask a question and, although the replies were probabley not what you wanted to hear, you have taken the advice on board and accepted it for what it is, comments aimed at the interest of dogs in general and yours in particular.  I would like to say well done you, Jacquie, not because you have taken our advice but because you listened and thought about what has been said and done the best for your dog and his breed. :) :) :)

Thanks for that JackieH

Now for a whole can of different worms - hope someone can help. Spike (staffie) misses our other staffie (Bonnie) and we are toying with the idea of getting him a friend. BUT Spike has unfortunately tasted Blood - Rabbit, Sparrow and Hamster!!!! This sounds awful I know BUt if I don't ask all you experts I'll never really know.

Is Spike likely to attack a pup. We have had 2 previous staffies and neither bothered very much. I'd really appreciate some thoughts on this

Another boy may be a problem as two males will usually fight to be top dog but as Spike is 7 he may not have that problem with a younger boy living in the house. Would suggest getting a bitch if you are seriously thinking about getting another SBT
- By tohme Date 11.05.04 13:51 UTC
My dogs regularly eat raw food, dripping with blood and often caught it on the "hoof" so to speak. None of extended their activities to dogs!

Thats made me feel a little more relaxed, will try and locate a breeder to get us a little bitch. Hopefully Spike won't feel the need to exercise his authority.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 11.05.04 16:23 UTC
Don't think the taking of prey is a problem; dogs know the difference between young of their own species and that of a possible meal. Think the problem may be the choice of breed, SBT is not my breed and I am only going by hearsay, but have heard there can be a problem, I am sure that some Staffie experienced people will offer advice before long. It may be that a bitch or a change of breed may be the best bet, however the breeder of the pup should be able to say what the chances are of you successfully introducing a new pup to your existing dog. Hope it will work out for you.
