rosie my westie is nearly 6 months , i love her to bits, she barks and yaps at every slight noise, day or night,,, i know dogs bark a lot any advice on how to curb the barking a little bit, im sure all the neighbours must hear her, ive been waiting for the complaints to start.... am i wanting a miracle or is it possible ????
It is possible to control barking. What do you do when she barks? If people shout at barking dogs or go down at night to them when they bark, they reinforce the barking. Ours did this at a similar age as he became sure of his territory, so we made sure curtains etc drawn and nobody went down at night, it was just Morse, thank you and it stopped, but it did escalate beofre it stopped - extinction burst. During the day we just say thanks Morse, ignore him and he stops barking, having done his job. Now I cant get him to " Speak" :D Thats the other thing people do put a command on it one for speak and one for hush.
Have you tried having a word with the neighbours before complaints start? If you tell them its a stage and your working on it they may be more sympathetic.

when its during the day or i know no neighbours arent in , i ignore her, she sleeps in my room at nite in her own bed, which is at the front of the house , so i suppose its my fault really, but with there being just me and rosie, i quite enjoy her being with me....

It's well worth having a pre emptive word with your neighbours - point out the positive sides of having a dog that barks too ;) To bring it more under control try calling her to you as she starts to bark, give her a command she knows (like sit) and then praise her for sitting - by this time the object of her attention should have been forgotten........
