Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Briard help please
- By jolin_71 [gb] Date 08.05.04 20:12 UTC
My friend owns a young briard dog (around 10 months) and he is a very bad eater.
He only wants to eat about every 3 days and she has tried him on a variety of different foods.
He appears to be very thin and bony and I've advised her to get him to a vet but any suggestions meanwhile would be very much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Linda

Hi, I also have a Briard and for the size of her she eats VERY little!  She doesn't really enjoy her dry complete food, but I feel that it is best for her and so persevered with it.  She now regularly eats 1 small cupful twice each day (morning and evening).  However, we do sometimes give her scraps and if she can she will eat the cats food :).  When you say a variety of foods - what are they?  We have tried Saffy on several types of dry complete (from very expensive to relatively cheap) and she doesn't really like any of them for long.  If we add anything to it however, she will gobble it down.  She also doesn't like raw chicken, but does like wet dog food.

One food she did really enjoy was tripe - the only thing was, despite me having a really strong stomach, it really made me heave and I had to give up on it!

If your friend feels her dog is underweight though, rather than slim, maybe she should consult a vet.  I take it he is wormed regularly with a prescription wormer?

Hi Fiona,
Thanks for your reply.
She has tried all the popular brands of food eg. pedigree, bakers complete, winalot etc and also lots of scrap stuff like chicken and eggs.
I don't know much about the breed but he is very bony to touch and appears to be thin to me.
As far as I'm aware she has only wormed him twice since she got him, not sure what she used first time but the last time she used pet shop stuff. I tried to persuade her to go to the vet for drontal but she used pet shop stuff as it was cheaper.
I asked her did he perhaps have worms but she said no because if he had she was sure he would eat more.
Hopefully she will take him to the vet on Monday and get him checked out.
Kind regards,
Linda
