Im thinking of breeding dogs as a hobby, and hopefully as a part-time income too. I would like a small smooth haired breed which do not require a lot of exercise and which produce large litters. Ive been told the staffordshire and english bull terrier are a good idea, and also the pug as theyre pups can be sold for £800 - 1000. can any breeders of these 3 breeds advise me where I could buy a good brood bitch, I have been advised not to start with a puppy as this will take longer to set up my foundation stock. hope you can help. thanks elaine weatherby

Elaine, this is the worst idea I have ever heard of in my entire life. Please find something less harmful to do with your spare time. You will find no support for this venture here, we care about dogs, alot, and many of us have spent 30 odd years learning. You are proposing to become a puppy farmer. I'll waste no more time on you. This is the kind of thing a troll would come on here and say.

Part time income????? you'll be lucky...........well if you do it the right way that is!

The more times I read this, the more convinced I am of a WUM......................large litters, a pug!!

WHAT IS A WUM?

okay, everyone here is trying to say, that no, this is not a good idea, however perhaps you would like to understand why instead of just being shot down. i believe that education is the start of stopping problems, not just to tell someone that they are stupid!
anyhow, breeding dogs takes years of learning. those that should be breeding are educated and experienced in the subject. the point of breeding is obviously to propagate the breed, but more than that, it is to pass on the BEST genes to a new generation of pups, hopefully in time, irradicating some unwanted traits or health risks that the breed has.
in order to do this kind of breeding responsibly, you would fine an almost perfect bitch and an almost perfect dog. these two should come from champion lines. they should have names for themselves in the world of dogs. they should be tested and free and clear of all medical problems, genetic and otherwise, they would be conformationally correct. in order to do this, one just doesn't pick a couple of breeds to try breeding. you would have to study one specific breed at a time and REALLY know that type. know its temperment, ideal look, etc...... this could take a long time. you would want to go to dog shows and talk with judges and other breeders. anyhow, as you can see, this is not a get rich scheme. this is a serious job that takes real hours and energy.
breeders that do not do all of these things, and im sure more, are called "backyard breeders". they breed dogs that are genetically inferior or just not quite right in the breed standard. out come pups that are nice and sweet, but may be full of passed down genetic flaws. anyhow, you get my point? this is a scientific venture, not a hobby. please reconsider.

Wind Up Merchant............

Elija, you have wasted your very sound advice. This guest has posted here with the specific aim of stirring up trouble.
A WUM is a wind up merchant. They are usually a little more subtle than this one. This one is very obvious, it gives us too much to go on, if this one had been less crude they would doubtless have had more fun. However as it is, it was spotted immediately.

that is the wierdest thing i ever heard of? you mean, there are really people that do this? why? i guess i did waste my advise.....oh well. how can you be so sure the post wasn't real? how could you tell? i mean, some people really ARE that stupid! lol.
thanks for telling me anyway, even though i don't really get it.

Think because the poster picked on so many points that they thought would get peoples hackles up, most WUM's and Trolls are more skilled than this example and would only suggest perhaps one thing that would set the hare running. This one has named as many as they can think of in the same post, trouble with replying you can get sucked in and in the end you are the one to get the wrists slapped and the WUM is banned and goes away to sign on under a different name to start all over again. I this case they did not bother to join first, may be a beginner in the art of causing trouble.
Have to agree it is difficult to tell sometimes and I am one of the worse, but I did see this one as not worthy of a reply, even if it were genuine it would not be worthy of a reply ;)
PS there is a mental condition that makes people do this, once looked it up in a psychological book and it has a name (forgotten) but it can be treated by a specialist in mental disorder,

Hi,
Maybe its not a wum, I think some people really think this sort of thing is fine. While I've been @ work I have spoke to a man who owns a 5 month puppy who wants to put him up for stud because he can make £350 a go (his words not mine). Tried to talk to him about breed stands, does his dog fit, health checks, etc, he says his dog is fine to breed from because he looks good and Oh, did he say its £350 a time. He also thinks he is ready to breed from now as he is mating the chairs and peoples arms, when I said he was too young he just repeated what he had said and said about the money again. Said he could make the money back that he paid for him. I really think that he thinks this is fine, as I didn't want to get into a fight with him about it at work I gave him this web site address but he said he didn't have time to come on here and could I find out what he wanted to know for him, which I haven't.
Don't think there is any talking to him, now when I see him I bite my tongue, try to smile and say Im really sorry but can't chat as i'm busy.
Don't think he will get too many people wanting to use his dog for stud
Lou
Unfortunately I know lots of people like that man Boxer. They really don't see any wrong in what they are doing because no one has told them and they have no perception that using animals this way to make money and to bring yet more dogs into the already overpopulated dog world (apart from perpetuating inherent genetic faults too because they don't do health checks) is wrong. If this person is genuine, then I'm glad they came to this site because if they bother to read up, they may come to change their minds about such practises.
its a wind up........ Julia

yeah, the poster might be a WUM...but the man who comes to the place i work, is definately a genuine nut case who thinks it would be wise to put his 5mth old dog up for stud, tried talking to him for the past 2 weeks but is not sinking in.
I've told him the next time he has a trip to the vet, just ask and maybe he'll be put off by the idea.
The sad thing is theres nothing that us genuine breeders can do too stop him,the only thing im worried about is infection to bitches and too the poor dog its self,i dont even think hes thought of this.. Julia

personally, i don't think he's thought of anything apart from the '£' sign above his dogs head.
I'm surprised he even know's the breed of dog he has, makes me sick :(
The shame of it is the dog has too put up with its owner for the next 9to15 yrs

was at a car boot sale today and one of the people on it went up to a woman and asked her if her GSD was a bitch, when she said no, he went oh that's a shame!! i just can't believe some people.

Spoke to the man at my my work today and found out that both him and wife work all day and puppy stays at home all day on his own, doesn't even go home on his dinner hour to him even though its only 2 mins away. Just gets worse and worse. :(
As i was reading the guests post I had to laugh!!!!! They must be a wum SURELY!!!!!!!!!! MONEY TO BE MADE??????????? PLEASE. It costs me more to breed a litter than i gain selling the pups! With annual health checkS and eye tests, certain food for individiual dogs, quarterly vet checks, collors they constantly chew off eachother, medication, bedding, exercise equipment, and thats just the adults let alone any pups!!!!! Profit, i dont think soooooooooooo.

Think of all that poo that will be in your house with all those puppies. And all your furniture will be chewed up. As 'huskymad' says, its going to cost YOU more to care for these puppies then you'll make in profit.
