Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Royal Canin/Cost??- Hypoallergenic foods
- By lel [gb] Date 07.05.04 14:39 UTC
Is anyone else feeding Royal Canin Hypoallergenic ?? And if so how much do you pay ?
I have rang Royal Canin up for information on local stockists and apparently its only available from Vets - and mine  charges £64.10 for a 14 kg bag
I have just had to pick myself up from the floor when I was told the price.
Blimey I thought Hills was expensive too
Are there any other hypoallergenic foods I could consider ? There has been a noticeabe difference in him since hes been on it so I'm reluctant to change the food but hells bells its dear !!
- By archer [gb] Date 07.05.04 16:17 UTC
What is it hes allergic to???
Archer...DID YOU SAY £64.10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- By lel [gb] Date 07.05.04 16:26 UTC
I knew it would be dearer due to the vets profit added on but blimey
Well he was licking his feet etc and we have done a food trial which has made a difference ( supposedly due to hydrolysed proteins) ? But then again he hasnt been having extras with it ( which i know he shouldnt have anyway with it being complete)
Think I need to look around for an alternative that is much cheaper.

:-o £64!! Bloomin heck! I'm sure i've seen Royal Canin in Pets At Home before....and i've definately seen it on petsdirectuk.com-and it was only £39 for a £15kg bag-although i'm not sure if it was the same stuff you were told about.

have you considered JWB (about £35 for 15kg) or Burns? I feed my 7mth lab bitch on Burns (have done since she was a pup) and it always seems to go down well-when it touches the side that is!. Its quite bland mind, so i tend to add cooked veg, tuna etc for a bit of variety. I pay £32.99 for a 15kg bag and it lasts a good few months. Arden Grange is hypoallergenic a £15kg bag is just under £30 directly off their website. Nutro always seems to get rave reviews on here, and i think its hypo....not sure of the costs though!

i'm now going to prasie my little girly for being cheap to feed!!!!

Because its veterinary diet its only available from the vets :(  Good old greedy vets eh??.
I will have a look at Nutro or Burns as Ive heard good things too
Just feel in a catch 22 situation incase we change food and the problem comes back

Another idea....www.hyperdrug.co.uk
They do prescription diets....just have to ask the vet for a prescription...cheaper!!

I feed Royal Canin, not the hypo alergenic (giant breed) i get it from my vet who is the cheapest around my area £35 for 14kg, i can also order it from pets at home and vaious other stores all charge £40.  The Ekanuba is more expensive than Royal canin, :-P

Hi
I get my Royal Canin from k9capers.com. No delivery charge over £30. The giant breed on their site is I think £35.25. for 15kg. I have found this is the cheapest site and delivery is quick too.

Well its obvious we're being ripped off - it says veterinary diet on the bag and  Royal Canin themselves say its only available from the vets too :(

Crikey, is the stuff from the vets gold plated??
- By archer [gb] Date 08.05.04 07:42 UTC
Lel
if its vet diet it will only be available from the vets apart from somewhere like hyperdrug.co.uk(vet chemist)
Archer
was it any cheaper on hyperdrug??

Your dogs food will only be one available from vets only.  My sister's Cavalier has a red meat intolerance and has to have food supplied by RC from the vets only.  Having seen the packaging, it's nothing like the stuff available at shows/Pets at Home etc.   Have you seen Quantum dog foods?  They may be able to help if you contact them?   They do a range of diets to help "intolerances", I believe. http://www.vetro.co.uk/index.htm

(Someone please show me how to do links!)

I can't do links either...LOL ;)  I've just looked at the food, it sounds like the "all in one holistic food I use to http://www.naturaldogfoodcompany.com/
Apart from the Quantum does contain corn ( Maize ) which some dogs can have reactions to. The all in one does contain a few oats and barley incase anyones dog has problems with these grains. I have seen some great results from the "all in one", my crew are all on it now, and there is never any left...LOL

managed to find this food on the hyperdrug website for £10 cheaper. ( Still expensive stuff mind you).
Just goes to show how greedy vets can actually be by adding a whole £10 just to order a bag in :(

Will I need a prescription for this food do you think?
- By archer [gb] Date 08.05.04 17:13 UTC
You probably will need a prescription but I believe you just phone the vet and they should give you one

If a dog has a red meat intolerance than there is no need for expensive hypo allergenic diets, just feed foods that do not contain red meat!
There are plenty of them about ie chicken, turkey or fish based; or you can feed home made cooked or raw.
