Hi, I am looking for a good general WWII book (for me), factual, plenty of pics, not too heavy (I'm a lightweight history person!), would like it to cover all aspects of the war
Maybe there are some good books (maybe biographical, fiction based on fact) that cover individual aspects of the war too? It is my birthday and I need to give family ideas of what to get me! Gets harder with every year!!! :)
Thanks, Hayley

If you want a book which covers every aspect of the war it would probably weigh a few kgs!
Good heavens, the war in the pacific, the nations of europe, Japan, on land, in the air and in the sea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I suppose realistically I won't be able to find a book that covers everything, but I really don't want a heavy tome (sp) either Tohme :) , but happy to take suggestions of a few different aspects of the war....

Hi Hayley
If you just want something lightweight that paints with very broad strokes, there is, in the Complete Idiots Guides range of books, one for WW II, called, funnily enough, The Complete Idiot's Guide to World War Two :D I haven't seen this particular one, but some of the other books in this series are really good fun and give the basics in an easy to read way.
Alternatively, why not ask for book tokens and you could have a lovely time browsing in a bookshop and choosing what takes your fancy :)

Hi Lesley
Had a look for the book on Amazon but couldn't seem to find it, maybe I will go for the tokens options, but my family like to give something they can wrap, but don't trust them to "pick" something for me! As for browsing, my children are 4 and 3, can't remember the last time I browsed!

Hi Hayley
Try doing a search in Amazon for the author, Mitchell Bard, which should bring it up :) I would have done a link, but the web address is one of those great, long, full on numbers ones which sometimes don't work in links when I try them!
Maybe your family could give you book tokens AND volunteer to watch the children for an afternoon whilst you enjoy some nice browsing time ;) And if they really want something to wrap, they could wrap up the tokens with a nice big box of chocs and a bottle of wine for you to indulge yourself while reading your new, carefully browsed for books :D
Lesley
PS Edited to say, I wouldn't trust my family to pick something for me either ;)
Thanks Lesley, found it on WHSmith and Amazon, cheaper on Amazon needless to say. Also found another one that looks good too, so will put those on my list. But will definitely suggest the wine, but not the chocs, much prefer a huge bag of Kettle Chips!!! :D
Thanks again, H

My youngest son josh is totally fascinated by both world wars.
Bought him a brilliant book at christmas called World War II Album- The Complete Chronicle of the Worlds Greatest Conflict by Hal Buell.
Contains the full history of how and why the war began and contains over 2500 photographs. Its a really really good book.
Although at 740 pages it couldnt be called light reading ;)
Hi Lel, couldn't see that one on the web, do you remember where you got it? Or do you have an ISBN number (only if you can get it from under his pillow ;)

We got it from Costco-
ISBN 1-57912-271-X
Thanks Lel, but I can only find one online, and that is used for £48.50! Think I may hve to stick with the others - we don't have Costco round here unfortunately, thanks for looking though

£48 - wow

It is a hardback book and very substantial as i said at 700 pluc pages - although we only paid £22 i think
Chuffed i got a bargain now :)
Marks and spencers were also selling World War 1 & 11 books at christmas - quite light with plenty of photos etc for a fiver - might be worth seeing if theres any left in the Sale or that ?
If you want something lightweight and amusing I can recommend Terry Deary's Horrible Histories. Usually for kids but I love em. I'm a bit of a history buff and find really interesting snippets in these books that the big boring books don't tell you about. Also they are set out in chronological order so you're not backing and forthing like in other books. They are a great compliment to read along side main history books and give you a fuller picture of events and the people you are studying.
