all the dogs at work have been switched to the BARF diet, they love it, what i want to know are AMP the only suppliers of meat/fish for dogs, as with 16 dogs that i look after each day we go through quite a bit of food

Hi Tanya

There are a variety of sources.  Try the local butchers - mine get in boxes of chicken carcass, and backs, sometimes with wings attached for me - roughly 30 for about £3.  The weight varies depending on the birds but if I fed nothing else then three boxes would probably last me over a week.  Using nothing but AMP would probably cost £35 - £40 per week and I can't afford that.

If you have an abattoir near you it might be worth going though all the rigmarol to get a licence to collect food from them such as tripe, hearts, lungs, liver and anything else they might be willing to let you have.  (See the thread on I have my ?? from DEFRA - can't remember what I put now).

Fish - if you are near a fishing port you can scour the beach when the fishing boats come in for the stuff they chuck over the side as being too small or get it from the boats or if you have a smokery nearby they will often let you have the scraps, heads etc.

Fruit and vegetables - I use any excess from the garden or stock up with whatever is in season (and therefore reasonably priced) at the time.

I find AMP brilliant when I have pups as the new owners don't always want to make prepare the food from scratch or when my back is bad and I can't do as much

There are several companies that deliver in your area - Landywood pet foods, albion Meats are a couple. Britbarf also have a list of suppliers so you could try joining their forum to see which is best.

Thanks for your help, were in the middle of sorting a kitchen area for the dogs as well as sorting storage space so at the mo my boss is going to the butchers daily for the dogs food, the dogs are all enjoying theyre food and the picky eaters are finally licking bowls clean before i have finished feeding everybody, the dogs are quieter and happier, and i may once again put my dogs back on to a BARF diet as soon as i have sorted the garden out.
One more question do you feed potatoes? just wondering as i know they can be poisonous

You shouldnt feed the green parts of potatoes as this contains the poison. On the subject of tata's does anyone know if feeding these will help to put weight on a dog?

I personally do not feed potatoes as I don't think they are a good idea. Lots of people I know feed baked potatoes howoever. For weight gain I would rather bump up the overall calorific value of the food and/or add oils/fats I feel it is more natural for the dog.
