Hi everyone,my akita-inu has just turned 1 year old last week, but since then if we are out and she sees a bin lorry,or a anything making lot's of noise she goes mad and refuses to walk past whatever it is.Is this something that happens whenever a dog reaches a certain age,or has my dog just went crazy!!!!

Yes - when dogs reach adolescence, as with most animals (and humans) they start to get concerned about things which haven't bothered them before.  The best way to handle this is not to be tempted to reassure, or force them to face their fears, but to manage things so they don't have to face the object of the fear too closely - do you have a playing field or similar near to a busy road that you can get to without going on the road?  If so, take her to the furthest point of the field away from the traffic and play with her, make a fuss of her - so long as she's ignoring the traffic.  Slowly, VERY slowly make your way closer to the traffic, all the time making a big fuss and jollying her along (don't forget not to reassure though).  If she shows signs of fear, stop and take her away a few steps until she's back in her 'comfort' zone.  Do this as many times a day as you can, over a period of several days/weeks and she'll soon forget what all the fear was about :)

Thank's for the reply Digger, she is fine with "ordinary" traffic,it just seems to be bin lorry's when they are emptying the bins into the back, and also those automated road sweeper thing's....maybe she has a phobia of council vehical's and worker's lol.I understand what your saying though, not reassuring her,i haven't been doing that, though i must confess that i have been virtually draging her past them, but from now on i won't do that.

It's probably because they aren't ordinary that she's concerned about them.  Do you have a council depot near you were you could expose her to them gently?  Draggin her past them is probably not a good idea, as it may push her to take extreme action sooner or later :(

I know what you mean digger,i could take her out on the day that the bin's get emptied and see if that does
any good.
