I was wondering what the average price was for a Chihuahua dog. Is there ever too much to pay? and are they worth the amount? why? anyone have a chihuahua?!

thanks

I don't know what the prices of purebred dogs are over there. But here the average for most purebred dogs form a reliable breeder is anywhere from $800.00-$1000.00 more or less.

Chihuahuas are wonderful. I have two. They have terrific dispositions. Mine aren't hyper or any of the other misconceptions. They do need plenty of socialization which I think a lot of people with tiny dogs neglect and that's why they can be ornery or feisty. I took mine everywhere with me right off the bat and they love everyone. When I have guests in the house, they'd rather sit on their laps than mine....by far. LOL. Novelty and all.

There's a local bar here that always has the same old locals in it (very small community) and sometimes I'll take Chulita with me. I set her down on the walkway as we get out of the car. She makes a bee line to the door. I open the door and there's no hesitation whatever. She rip roars across the building...a mere blur to go say hello to people. One guy I know holds her on his lap at the bar and lets her lick the whip cream off of his coffee drink, right out of his mug. She is so cute, cheerful and friendly that everyone likes her. She's small and so most of the businesses around here welcome her inside.

Alot of people with toy breeds spoil them, baby them too much, over protect them and keep them at home. This is a mistake. You do have to be careful of them where other animals are concerned, birds of prey, other dogs, and learning to watch where you step, but over all, they're just like any other dog, only feather light. They are snugglers and great companions.

Carrie,
Have you got a litter of Chihuahuas on the way! You seem to be doing a brilliant sales pitch on virtually every topic I look at! (LOL)

LOL. I guess I'm just enthusiastic about the breeds I have. I love 'em all. If I were any more "mad" than I already am, I'd add a Whippet, another Doberman and maybe a Chinese Crested. LOL. I think they're cute....look like little ponies. But with the 27 degrees F. below zero we got last winter, don't think they'd make out too well. The Chi's already have to wear a coat if it's really cold and so does the Dobe. I got him a fleece lined bomber jacket. He looks positively dapper in it. LOL.

No, I don't have a litter. I have strong feelings about breeding dogs and what prerequisites one should have. I leave the breeding up to the experts. Plus, my Chi's aren't from a reliable breeder. I learned a lot since I got them. They're, I'm sure not the perfect specimens so I would never consider breeding them, plus they're fixed. Whew! In fact the boy Chi may not even be purebred for all I know. He sure doesn't look it, (way too big) but the girl does look pretty good. Another Chi breeder said so too. Hee hee.

Anyhow, look online about what to look for in a reputable breeder....genetic health testing, show titles, etc. It will tell you a lot. Also, if you haven't, research the breed a lot, their health issues, their breed description (you probably already have done that). I spent a year learning about Dobermans before I got Lyric and it took a long time to find him. Reputable breeders often sell their pups before they hit the ground and have waiting lists. So, spend time and be patient. You'll be thankful you did. I got the best Doberman I possibly could. He has a fantastic temperament, conformation, the best I could do as far as health history of his anscestors etc. His sire's breeder just got #1 working dog breeder of the year award and #1 Doberman breeder of the year award. His grandsire has been #1 Dobe in this country many times over and has just recently retired. (Marienburg's Repo Man)  He is very well known within Doberman circles. He is supposed to be a very laid back, sweet dog but still has the working drive he should.

For an 8-1/2 month old Dobe pup, Lyric is turning out super. He has energy for sure and needs his exercise and ample involvement from me as far as training every day, but he's not a maniac at all. All these problems I read about, jumping up, biting, aggression, wild, out of control horse play....I have none of that. He has done his share of chewing things when I wasn't watching, and he does get into things, very curious...but his behavior, manners and disposition are stupendous I think for a youngster of his breed. I had my doubts at about 4 months of age, but he's really settling down a lot.

So, I guess what you put into the dog... you get out.

Good luck on finding a Chi. Keep us posted on what you find out. Take your time.
