Hi all
I have just been chatting with a friend of mine who has an 18 month old dane, she has problems with her eyes, mainly the eylashes curling inwards, i mentioned it to another dane friend who called it cherry eye, is this right?  also she is getting treated at the vet, but not with much success, is there anything she can try to possibly avoid the operation the vet has said will be needed should the condition not get better soon, and also anything to help with the itchy eye? :-)

Don't have any experience of this but I understood that Cherry Eye involved a gland under the 3rd eyelid. Eyelashes curling inward is usually mean entropion which is an hereditary condition. Both conditions usually require an operation.

Cherry Eye & ingrowing eye lashes are two totally different things try thislinkabout cherry eye

Both will eventually need an operstion I think

My dane has had two operations for cherry eye  and neither have worked

the cherry eye is basiclly like a red lump in their eyelid and  it waters alot.  it does no harm to leave it but when operated on it canled to other problems - in my dogs case his lymph glands came up and had to have them operated on -  and also can lead to dry eye which thank fully he never got

My vet tried to operate on Willis for this - it was just a red flashy slightly raised eyelid in the corner and he wnted to mess with it, I wouldn't let him. Honestly, they can't help themselves from interfering sometimes - if it aint broke don't fix it!!!

Thanks Guys

My friends said her vet gave it a name begining with E so it must be the entropion it was another breeder who i mentioned it too said cherry eye, just one other quick thing, my friend has just been to see a new puppy, the owner is coincidently the owner of her first dogs father,(stud) he has told her that he is going to be getting one of the daughters back (not her dog) to mate with the father, is this ok????? ;-(

T-bone had cherry eye and I had a third eye gland tuck done on her cause it was rubbing on her lense and it was iritating it to the point we needed antbiotics, and it would of caused her to go blind with out the operation. The op worked like a charm and she now has beautiful eye's.

This does not sound like cherry eye, it does sound more like entropion.

Hi there, yep she has been back to the vets again, it is entropion, she gets her eye stiched but it does not seem to be working, looks like and operation for sure :-(

HI guys

I am new to this and i am having problems trying to start a new post (I keep getting an error saying this feature is disabled), so i searched for cherry eye and am adding to this post(hope no -one minds)
I have had a bulldog for 2 weeks he is 13 weeks old now. When i got him he already had cherry eye.  The breeder said that it is not bothering the dog and that i should wait until he is at least 6 months old before we have an operation. (Apparently incase the other eye gets cherry eye too, the dog would not to have to have 2 operations).  I have decided to go with getting the cherry eye completley removed rather than have it tacked, i am aware of the risk of dry eye, but i have read a few posts on here and it seems to have a better success rate.

So my question is, when should i have the dog have this operation? Is 6 months old about right?  Also what would happen if you just left it alone? Does it have to be operated on?

Ps one more question, my dog has really bad wind, is there anything you can feed them to make them smell fresher:-)

Many thanks for any advice you have

Hi,

I am feeding him Pedigree puppy food which is tinned with pedigree chum puppy biscuits, this is what the breeder had him on so i have just continued with the same brand

Thanks
