Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / JWB food how much to give per day
- By HAMISH75 [gb] Date 26.04.04 10:51 UTC
Hi All

I have been over today to the petshop and have got some JWB Turkey and Rice, for my westie Hamish, he has been on Eukanuba and has been going off of this because of the size of the biscuit so i thought i would try this as the vet recommended this as the next best thing to Eukanuba. I have been feeding 90g per day of this what it says on the packet for his weight, but on this JWB bag it says for a 4-11.5kg dog to feed between 170-225g per day this seems a lot more than to what he has been having on the Eukanuba and i just wondered if anybody else was feed JWB as to what they were feeding there dog, Hamish is just under 8kg at the moment and i was just wanting to check as i don't want to give him too much and overfeed him as this seems a lot more than he has been having.
Also how do i do the change over to the food as i don't want to upset his stomach.
I gave him a few out of the bag when i came home and he absolutely loved them he woofed them down and was looking for more.
Thanks
Helen and Hamish

You should change over to a new food over a period of days or you may have problems with tummy upsets.

I should think the Eukanuba is more concentrated that JWB and that is why you give more. If you look at the biscuit you can see and feel that the biscuit is different.

Helen if its any consolation, I was surprised at the amount JWB suggests (I'm on the same scale as you 170-225), in comparison to her previous food (in fact, in just changing from the puppy to the adult) but like the person says above (can't see their name now, will edit, sorry person!), it will be because of the composition of the food, and therefore don't worry about it being too much.  I can't remember how old Hamish is, but he's a similar weight (she's approx 7.5kg but depends which scales in the vets she's on, :-O ).  I have read from more experienced people on here in the past that the dog food manufacturers tend to overestimate the daily amount required, in order to get you to buy more food more often ;-), so don't worry if you feed under.

Millie is still on 2 meals a day, so I took the packet instructions, that if feeding 2 meals, to give one third in the morning, and 2 thirds in the evening.  So because she is still a puppy, I plumped for the lower figure of 170g, and consequently give about 55g in the morning and 110 in the evening (when you see the 110 in one bowl though, it looks a HUGE amount!). I also feed home made food now though, so I couldn't say the exact amount she actually gets, as some days she only gets one JWB meal. My scales are also very dodgy  (very cheap Argos jobby), but it gives me roughly an idea, and I don't think you have to worry tooooo much...I think the main thing is to work out an amount you think is right, then see how your dog goes with it - is it always leaving some behind in the bowl (too much) or does it always scoff and ask for more (not enough).  Although then you would have to judge that they're not just being greedy piggys. ;-) Millie's latest trick is finishing her dinner and then sitting barking at the bag on the counter.

Always change it over gradually - some say 3 days, some people on here I've read say 3 weeks so there's no 'definate' answer but the general idea is to add a little bit to the current food (ie reducing the current food a little at the same time), then over the next couple of days, gradually increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of the old food until eventually they are changed over.  I always change foods over when I think I have about 3-4 days left of the old food, but I always find it ends up taking longer, and I've actually taken about 5-7 days to fully change over, which is better anyway - the more gradually you do it, the less likely you are to upset the stomach.

Hi

Thanks for your reply, i will try splitting the food into 2 meals, at the moment i am giving him part of the JWB and Eukanbua until i can change over completely as i don't want to upset his stomach so am going to do it gradually, he does pick out the JWB first and then eats some of the Eukanuba but he will not eat all of this, he goes mad for the JWB so at least he seems to like it, and the biscuits are a lot smaller so they are a better size for a westie.
I emailed JWB and they said for an 8kg westie he should have around 200g daily, so i will just see how he goes, if he seems to be getting too fat i will lower him or vice versa.
Thanks again and i will let you know how he gets on.

That seems a lot...would have thought it would have been less with it being a premium quality dog food.Just checked my bag (Autarky) and it says dogs between 5-10 kgs= 65g-105g daily! I'd never get 200g down Zara..or even Kas to think of it...and he weighs 22Kg

That does seem a lot.  I feed Burns, and for my 10kg Cocker Spaniel I give him 100g a day, and I don't get much waste or smelly wind from the other end!! :D
