Ahhhhhh the joys of puppyhood.  I'm afraid to tell you that this is prefectly normal with any puppy.  Think of of from the pup's point of view.  He has just been seperated from his mother and littermates and he has been brought into a strange home with strange smells.  I went through 6 weeks of sleepless nights with my 2nd pup.  I too said 'He's not getting the better of me' and after the 6th week, I let him roam the house.  After that I never heard a peep out of him!  Your friend should get the pup a crate, make it a little haven in there for him with nice cozy blankets.  I know she doesn't want her in the room with her, but if she put the crate next to the bed she would probably be fine.  After a couple weeks, get her to move the crate further from the bedroom until she cry's no more.

She will get there in the end.....honest!
