Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Elevated Dog Feeding Stands
- By jwhagger [gb] Date 20.04.04 13:37 UTC
I have a 15 month Boxer which I would like to buy an elevated feeding stand for him. I have read that this is a good way to overcome potential problems with bloat that large chested dogs can suffer from.

I have tried all over to get one but having no luck.

I would appreciate everyones views on these lelevated stands and if anyone could tell me where to buy them from it would be appreciated

There are a few good websites where you can buy the dog stands from quite reasonable prices (Im not sure if Im allowed to put web addresses on these forum pages-is it advertising?) You can try ebay I saw a few on there recently. Good luck

Hi,

If you do a search for elevated stands on here you'll find a fairly recent thread on it.  The latest thinking on the stands as a preventative for bloat is that they're not :)  However, some people, myself included, find that our dogs prefer to use a stand and seem more comfortable eating from one than from the ground, whilst others find their dogs prefer the food on ground level.  In that thread Tohme also very ingeniously suggested using an upturned bucket with the bottom cut out as a cheap and effective alternative, which is what I'll be using next time I need another stand :D

I find a washiing up bowl fits nicely on a bucket and makes an excellent elevated feeding stand

I heard that elevated bowls increase the chances of bloat.  Did I hear wrong?

HI

Yeah I do still believe it DEcreases rather than INcreases. But I have no evidence to prove it. My lab is having these elevated foodstands. If nothing else it has to be more comfortable for her to eat like that.

This study says that the risk may increase with elevated feeding which contradicts previous thinking.  No guarantees either way and it is only one of a number of factors that may be implicated in bloat/GDV; best thing to do is what you feel most comfortable with I think :)
