Hi,
I know quite a few of you have had puppies lately, so just looking for some advice, as my two local vets are contradicting each other! My puppy is due for his second jab at 10 weeks, and one vet is saying he can then go down on the ground straight away - the other vet is saying he must still be carried for another 10 days after. Of course I don't want to take any risks, but 10 days seems quite a long time to wait - what does everyone think? (I did wait a week with my last pup).
Hilda

our vets say straight away, and they have never come to any harmit depens on what they use I think.
If you are not sure why not wait afew days :)

Not gonna help matters as my vet says a week to ten days after second injection.
so thats 1 for straight away and 1 for waiting :)
Edited to add mine get their second vacination at 10 week
Thanks for replies - seems the usual thing to do is wait then. Maybe I'll sort of compromise - leave the extra time with going out on the field, outdoors etc, but should be all right to go on the floor at dog club I should think - the dogs there are all vaccinated anyway.

Hi Sunbeams
I was told to wait a week after my pup had his second injection at 12 weeks old.
Jax

Most say 2 weeks after but I must admit I take mine out a week after!!! Sorry, not much help am I??
I take mine out a few days after second innoculation but I do ask if there are any bugs circulating in the area such as parvo etc in which case I would wait for full immunity to take effect.
Hi Kerioak,
If there was anything going around, I don't think I would even take puppy out carrying him! Touch wood, we rarely seem to have any problems round here. I think the majority of people still get their dogs vaccinated, though there are a few that use homeopathic nosodes now.

I did as the vet told me and waited a week after his 2nd jab, then started taking him out, this made him 13wks,and last wk at 17wks believe it or not he caught parvo!!!!!!!!!!! pleased to say he is making good progress and hopefully will be back with us at the beginning of the week.
Hi shesthe1,
That's terrible - glad to hear your puppy is coming through it though. Did the vet say if there had been any other cases of parvo in your area? My friend who used to breed yorkies actually reckons that some pups can get parvo about 4-5 weeks after their jabs actually caused by the injection, though I think she said only if it's the live vaccine. Wonder if there's any truth in that (obviously that's just her opinion).

Assuming there is nothing going around I always take mine out within a few days of the last injection. I figure poor early socialising is more of a risk. Obviously there is a slight risk but life is a risk anyway.
Just my way of doing things, John

Thanx Hilda
He is now back home with us,thankfully making a full recovery, lost an awful lot of weight, but still his usual bouncy self, the vet did say that parvo is a big problem at the moment they are getting at least 2 dogs a month with it,needless to say mine just had to one of them!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad your puppy is back with you and is okay. I expect he'll put his weight back on pretty quickly. I'll have to remember to check with my vet whether there have been any parvo cases round here recently. I wonder why your pup got it though, as he'd had his full set of jabs - did you ask the vet about that? Maybe they can still catch it, but in a milder sort of form - still a worry though.
