Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / BARF diet

Hi everyone,
Although we have moved away from commercial food on the whole, we do still use Autarky now and again because we're still nervous that our dog could be missing out on some vital ingredient.

The difficulty we're having is that all the books we have read on BARF are a bit vague, I know all dogs are different so its very hard to give a standard diet but I wish someone would just say on Monday we feed this on Tuesday we feed this but nobody does.

We have an excellent local butcher who will keep anything aside for us to pick up each day but we don't know what to ask him for, it seems a bit silly still buying Autarky when we can have lots of things FREE from our butcher :) so any help would be very gratefully recieved :)

I feed my dogs twice a day.

Every mornings: RMBs - chicken wings, thighs, drumsticks, carcases, turkey drumsticks, pork chops, lamb chops, etc

Mon evening: Liver*
Tuesday evening: Tripe
Wednesday Evening: Kidneys*
Thursday Evening: Fresh or Canned Fish
Friday Evenings: Heart
Saturday Evening: Pulped Veggies, yoghurt, raw eggs with shell
Sunday evening: lungs
Monday evening yoghurt, pulped fruit and eggs

* This may be fed alone or with muscle meat of some description.

Every day they also get:

1000mg of FBO
400 iu Vitamin E (natural)
Fresh garlic clove crushed
1000mg Vitamin C with bioflavenoids
Keepers Mix (alfalfa, kelp etc)

This is an example, they also get recreational bones to gnaw, pigs trotters, rabbits, pigeon etc etc etc

The above includes everything that a dog needs in its diet! make sure that the animal source is as varied as possible that also goes for veggies and fruit.

Kmythy Schulze's book natural nutrition for dogs and cats gives a detailed breakdown of where you can find all nutrients and sample diets.  She does, however fast her dogs, I do not!

I know what you mean, i had that problem when i was first th inking about switching to raw.

Here is an example of my dogs diet.

Morning: Tinned/Fresh fish (my housemate does morning feeds so it has to be something easy)
Evening: Chicken Wings/Muscle meat/Turkey necks/Lamb ribs
Recreational: lamb shanks, larger meaty bones,
Veg/Offal is added to either a minced meat meal, or substitued for fish for breakfast, and they get that 2/3 times a week. Also sometimes i add a raw egg, including shell.

Veg: selection of: Spinach, Celery, Carrots, Peppers, Garlic, spring greens, red cabbage, beetroot, apples, olive oil,

Hope that helps!

Aren't raisins bad for dogs

here it says they are Yet they are giving their dogs them  ???

Yes raisins are not really recommended for dogs and I would not be feeding bread, peanut butter or oatmeal as part of a raw diet either.  A snack may be ok but not as a staple part of the diet.
