lily (almost 9 months) was just lying in bed when she wet herself (a decent sized wee - it smelt quite strongly too) she didn't seem to bothered and just moved somewhere else. is this normal ? she's never done anything like this before. she seems to have been weeing less though the past 2 days.

I would get her checked at the vets, it could be a water infection. Alarm bells rang when you mentioned that she hadn't been going so often lately and the smell.
noooo not the vets again... i think i'm personally paying for my vet's retirement...

I too would run her off to the vet and have them check her urin...Hope all is ok :)
i'm going to call for an appointment first thing tomorrow, my house reeks !
help how do i get a sample ???? she won't voluntarily wee, only accidents when lying down. i've been taking her outside and trying to get her to wee, but me following her around with a pot is hardly helping the matter. i have an appointment at 3 so i need the sample soon ! please help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know i've missed the boat for three, hope that the vet has been able to diagnose what definately sounds like a urine infection. I work with people who have dementia and often we are unable to obtain a sample, but usually the Dr can perform other tests and take a good history and can perform a pretty accurate diagnoses even without a sample, so hope fully this is also true for our furry friends! let us know what happens.

the vet had a prod at her belly and it seemed a little sore, then i was sent out with a kidney dish to have another go at a sample - after 15 mins walking around i got what can only be described as a dribble. luckily it was enough for some of the tests. she has very high protein, but no blood or glucose. so she's been given some antibiotics to see if they clear it up, or if it's still a problem, to go back in 10 days for further treatment.

ps. though of course she managed a little wee as soon as she got home !
Lily, did the vet tell you to try and get her to drink more? If so I know how difficult it is, you can lead a horse to water..... as the old saying goes. A good tip I read on this site is to give ice cubes or watery beef stock, or honey mixed with water they are more likely to go for those. Hope she gets well soon. :-)
i wasn't told, but i actually gave her some stock to drink earlier :) the only thing is that i'm now worried that it is to do with her kidneys, with the problem being high protein - because a month or so ago she ate a load of rimadyl tablets which caused her some kidney problems, a second blood test at the time showed her to be back in normal limits, but what if they've gone wrong again ?

Don't go looking for problem that are unlikely to be there. It is no doubt an infection and will clear with the AB's, had the vet thought it was her kidneys they would have taken a blood test.

I don't know about dogs but in people urinal infections can cause dementia like symptoms & incontinence
It could just be that & nothing to do with her kidneys

If the kidneys have been irritated it may have left them more open to infection..
Try not to worry Lily, if the vet knows her history he would have checked her kidneys if he thought there was a problem. I may be wrong but having water and kidney infections myself in the past was led to believe that protein in a sample is usually blood traces and not necessarily from the kidneys, just from the infection itself and quite usual. If she had a kidney infection she would be very ill with a temperature, no appetite, and very weak. I bet she will be fine in a day or 2 after taking the anti biotics. :-)
thanks for trying to calm me down :)
one good thing is that lily is great at taking tablets, even the monster sized horsepills they have given her !
