Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Venison Burns and Mini Bites

Hi there

Have two Border Collies.  14 month old Ky is fed on the adult and I would like to try the Venison and Rice version.  Has anybody tried this?  I asked someone about it and they seemed to think there was a problem with it.  Is this correct?

Secondly, I have a 4 1/2 month old Collie called JC.  He is on the Mini Bites and weighs about 8kg now which is great because he was the runt and very small.  Vet reckoned he was about 3 kg underweight when we first got him.  He is doing wonderfully on it but unsure when to change him to adult.  The back of the package only gives feeding information up 10kg so am I right to assume that he should be changed then.

Unfortunately we didnt feed the older one on Burns at the start by JWB hence the question.

Some people use the Venison one because they have a problem with digestion. Its like any food its suits some and not others I've used it found it perfectly ok but is is dearer than the other Burns foods.

We all have our favourites but I do use Burns with a couple of mine and have no problems just dont change straight over do it over a period of days.

From what I can remember the puppy feeding guide is 20g per 1kg of bodyweight. This reduces to 10g per 1Kg in adulthood. Burns reccommend changing to their adult food at about 6months. If you ring them they are very helpful 0800 0181890.

Hi,
I changed my two adult dogs on to the venison and rice about two months ago. I have tried all of the top foods and am so pleased with the results from Burns. My dogs are nowhere near as hyper as they used to be, they no longer itch all the time and they REALLY enjoy their food. I honestly can't believe the difference it has made to them. I also use the fish food and the chicken as treats and take it out of their daily allowance of food which means Burns is the only food they now have. Cannot recommend it highly enough!!!

Thanks for everyone's replies on this.  Glad to hear there is no problem and will probably try Ky on it at the weekend.  Have to say I wholeheartedly agree with everything.  I would not let them eat anything else.  The only addition they have it a bit of naturediet with it just to give them something moist but thats it.

Burns is going to be available here in Australia in a couple of months(cant wait),but one thing is worrying me!I am trying to put weight on one of my girls and the general concencus with burns is that dogs drop weight when fed on it,which is the last thing i need.I love the ingredients and i really want to try it but i dont want any of my dogs to lose any weight.

What do you guys think,is this true??

Hi Christine

Yes, some dogs do drop weight with Burns.  But it might be be reassuring for you to know that we are actually managing to get weight on one of ours on Burns!  Our youngster has always been lean to the point that it was embarrassing, although he also had muscles as hard as iron on him!  We had him checked by our vet who did various tests and pronounced him as fit as a flea, but agreed he needed more body on (which was something coming from our vet, who likes them very lean!)  By this time we had already switched the boys to Burns, which the vet thoroughly approves of, and he recommended adding a little chopped up pure beef dripping to the youngster's food, and this is doing the trick.  It's slow, but he is improving and the vet reckons he might finally mature and finish when he's about 6 :D  The older one didn't ever drop any weight.

We think its a fantastic food and the dogs absolutely love it.  But, like all foods it dosn't suit all dogs (even the different varieties of it can make a difference, the venison didn't suit mine) but if it does suit them, it's great!  I were you I would certainly give it a go when it reaches Oz :)

As a food it is excellent, but I have given up using it because of the amount of dust, I don't like the waste and the dogs breath it in and then snort and choke, so for me it was back to Arden Grange.

I always had a problem with my older collie losing weight because he is allergic to wheat and gluten.  Went onto Burns and he has put weight on no end.  I do keep him slightly heavier than he should be, but if he manages to get his head into anything or some well meaning person gives him a bonio it means that it doesnt affect too much if he ends up having the squitts for a couple of days.  You could try adding a little naturediet to it which is what I do
