Is stronghold safe to use on pregnant or in season bitches.

Guest read the labels fully.

I do not use Stronghold I use frontline and I am sure it says not for pregnant bitches.

Please be careful and double check the label or ask the vet especially a pregnant bitch.

Frontline is not recommended to be used on pregnant bitches. But can be used on pups over 2 days old.
Stronhold is recommended to be used & safe in pregnancy.(according to the vet. profession) Stronghold can only be used on pups over the age of 6 weeks old.

Yip that is what I said or at least meant that I didn't think frontline was suitable for pregnant bitches.

I personally would not take the risk when chemical products of any sort and that includes puppies until they are a few weeks. Seems strange that you can use Stonghold on a pregnant bitch but not the puppies.

I would imagine most people would try to get the bitch treated etc up to date will everything as best as possible before mating in the hope of preventing problems and if any arise to wait till safe to before tackling them.

I totally agree with you blue ~ I wouldn't put anything on a pregnant bitch myself either.

Stronghold is sometimes used to treat mange on a pregnant or lactating bitch. :)

I was told whatever happens don't give treatment to pups, insted trat mum and then drops will fall onto the pups!  That was 5 years ago though!!!!

When Frontline first came out it was meant to be safe for use on pregnant bitches - result, lots of re-absorbed pups.  The lab never admitted the problem, just changed the directions for safe use!  I use  Stronghold on a regular basis, but would never use it on a pregnant bitch, just in case!

Gwen, that really scares me.  I asked my vet for something for a pregnant bitch, and he gave me Frontline.  I waited until about 4 days before the litter was due before I used it, left it on for 24 hours and then bathed her in baby shampoo to get rid of all trace of it (and so she was nice and clean for when the pups arrived).  I have never used anything on pregnant bitches before, but I found a couple of fleas this time and wanted to make sure she was clear before the pups came.  The pups were fine, but I will NEVER ever use it again on a pregnant bitch.  Thank goodness I read this post.  I'm sure it says on the bottle that it is OK for pregnant and nursing bitches, I know I would have checked everything most neurotically!!

When it first came out my Vet rang the manufacturer to check it out, as one of the partners in the practice was pregnant herself.  They assured her everything was OK.  I used it on Maud (picked up a flea while having her scan!) 3 pups very clear on 5-6 week scan, only 1 arrived.  At the same time friend used it on an in whelp bitch, whole litter reabsorbed, and also with an Afghan we knew.  My Vet rang and wrote to the lab, as did we.  We never got an answer, she was fobbed off.  We dont use anything anymore or pregnant bitches!  However, I do know others who have used it on in whelp girls without problems.

I had the same experience with Frontline on pregnant persian cats.   Lab never admitted any liability.
