At 14 your friend is a good age for a Newfie ;)  Sadly I have to say I lost my 14 year old Lab cross 2 years ago with a haemangiosarcoma of the spleen - it had metasized (spread) to her lungs by the time it was caught and within two months breathing became difficult for her.  the biggest problem with spleenic tumours is that as they have a very good blood supply they can rupture - which is why surgery is not always an option.

Ofcourse your vet could be wrong - it wouldn't do any harm to have a second opinion, if it is a haemangiosarcoma then these are often found in larger breeds in old age.

I'm sorry I can't be more positive, but enjoy your friend for whatever time he has left, and have the courage to make that final decision when the time comes - he will thank you for it, believe me {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}
