We have a couple of pups in our litter that throw up after eating. They then just carry on and eat what they have brought up and are fine. Is this a sign of megaeshophagus or something else? They are fit and lively pups in every other way. Bit baffled.

What breed are they?

German Shepherds.
Hi Becky, it is a sign and it is hereditary but if they are the 'gutty' ones in the litter?? they have probably swallowed too much too quick. We are all quick to panic and assume the worst when we have pups, hope that's all it is.

Hi Debbie
I think that is what the problem is, they just eat it too fast. It's not happening after every meal, but I will keep my eye on them.

Hi Becky, when I first noticed that Aspen had a problem she was very young, when she used to drink water it came back out of her nose. The vet said that was probably a very early warning sign. If the pups do have it you will know about it, nearly every meal is a bad one but as they get older the problem does seem to get worse before it gets better, like you've said keep a very close eye on them.

hi krys...it is not uncommon in gsd's ..there are varying degrees of it...sometimes they throw up and the other puppies eat it so you don't see it everytime..they generally upchuck as opposed to wretching ...sometimes you can hear water ;''clicking''in the throat after they drink and they are running.....if you really suspect it its better to get x-rays to confirm it....i have a four year old male that has a mild case and he does fine
