Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Nice bone to chew?
- By Charlie [gb] Date 12.04.04 22:06 UTC
Please help, so confused! I would love to get Leon (15 week old GR) a nice big bone to chew on but not sure what is safe for him? He has several Nylabones but gets bored of them, I think he would like something that he can destroy a bit. He has started teething and i'm desperate to get something to dissuade him from munching the garden fence/my feet/whatever else he can get his mouth round! He has plenty of chew toys. What can I buy that is big and tasty and safe??

Get a nice marrowbone from the butcher. He'll love it.

Being completely thick but presumably he would have these raw? Have located a butcher so off to make a bone pilgrimage shortly!!

My 11 week old labs have raw marrowbone, love the marrow and give then something to get their teeth into instead of me!!!
- By kayc [gb] Date 14.04.04 13:54 UTC
Just a point, on a large knuckle end of the marrow, there may be some grissle hanging off of the fat, cut it off, pups that age may choke on this.

Can you believe I went to the nearest butchers and they dont have bones anymore? I can't believe it! And I got lost on the way back...will have to keep trying!
- By ozzie72 [au] Date 15.04.04 13:25 UTC
Charlie keep trying, your dog will love ya for it :D
Mmmm a butcher with no bones   Another one to try is "Beef soup bones" they cant eat the bone but there is heaps of meat on them to keep them busy for a while.
Definatly only feed RAW bones as cooked bones splinter and cause injury!

Hee hee surely a butcher with no bones is a supermarket!! Have found another one on way to work but if I get some I will have to try to hide them in the fridge at work for twelve hours...hmm..
Cheers for the help everyone, v useful xxx

When you find a butcher with bones 'cherish and nurture' him, they're getting rarer all the time. I got some fresh pigs ears from mine the other day. I cannot begin to tell you how gross that is!

I can believe that , I have Hugh Fearnely-Whittingstalls river cottage cookbook and he has a recipe for crispy pigs ear with mustard! The "luggers" you buy from the pet shop are bad enough! Dogs seem to prefer them buried for a while until they have gone white and rubbery though!

I found one! Only the fourth attempt! Went on the way to work today and got a nice fat marrowbone and then would you believe one of the girls at work had gone to her own butcher to get me one (so I pretended I hadn't got any cos didn't want to spoil it). Bless.
Not sure I can handle pigs ears yet...bleurgh...
- By TylerG [gb] Date 24.04.04 16:14 UTC
daft question, but did they charge you for the bones?  A butcher wanted £5 off me for a couple of bones, which I thought was a bit off when it's effectively waste.  But maybe I'm a tight northerner ;)

I pay 12p for a bag...usually has 2 or 3 knuckle or marrow bones in

It is actually law that the butchers have to charge you.!!!!!!!!(got this info off my next door neighbour, she is 75 and still working at butchers that she has worked at for 20 years!!!!!!!!!!) I think a marrow bone at my butchers costs about 25p each.

25p is better than $4 each for a marrow bone, which is what i have to pay :(

A butcher in Banbury bags them up (about 3 marrow-bones sawn up in each, or loads of ribs etc) and leaves them in a trolley outside his shop every Saturday for people to help themselves.
:)

I've got a visual picture of all the stray dogs in Banbury, queued up outside the Butcher's every Saturday morning waiting for him to put the bones out  :D
- By Charlie [gb] Date 25.04.04 02:23 UTC
Nah they were fab, only 25p which I felt a bit cheeky paying to be honest. Love the mental pic of strays in Banbury, in fact that isn't that far away (well, 50 miles each way but can include a visit to my sister in hospital so worth it) - might take a trip over there! Which butcher is it??
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 25.04.04 07:19 UTC
It's Betts, the butcher in Church Lane (off Parsons Street).

I pay $4 for 1 marrow bone and $10 per kilo of pork ribs, all the butchers charge the same prices,so i wouldnt be complaining ;)

When i can get to my butcher, i get big bags full for nowt!

He says he has to incinerate them, which costs him, so doesnt care if i have them for nowt. I get lamb ribs (whole racks or cut up depending on what mood he is in), chicken carcasses, GOOSE carcasses, pork ribs, lamb shanks, marrow bones etc..... he makes some weird stuff in there so i often get some bizarre stuff, i had some bits of kangaroo the other day, not sure what bits they were though!

Yep, cherish and nurture your butcher, take him gifts, bottles of wine, etc, they are a dying breed, being replaced by 'second hand meat sellers' in markets and supermarkets across sthe country.

I will, promise! They were super nice to me anyway, went in there in my uniform on the way to work which may have made a difference but they were fab, full of useful advice (most of which I had previously read on here anyway but didn't say so). Shall ask for pigs trotter next time. Are they ok for a 17 week old?
- By tohme Date 27.04.04 08:53 UTC
