Hi Kate, well what sort of stuff do you like? If you want theme parks, beaches and excitement then you will be rather disapointed as you have chosen the part of Devon that has not been totally ruined by tourists, and not much visited. However, there is Dartmoor which in itself is fabulous & wonderful if you enjoy walking. You will need a very stock-proof dog though, if you are bringing one with you? Okehampton is a small market town & has a Dartmoor museum in it. If you like good food there is a smart pub nr Lydford - the Dartmoor Inn- (about 8 miles away) or if you like good quality local-produced but simple stuff then you must go the the pub in Bratton Clovelly (which is 5 minutes from germansweek). Tell Torben I sent you!!! :)
If you want a beach then bude (north cornwall) is the nearest (about 40 minutes drive) and if you want a city then Exeter is 45 miles away & the nearest big place. If you want a reasonably local event in june then from10th-12th its Royal cornwall show, about 45 minutes drive. There are no theme parks or toursity things around here luckily. oh there is Dingles Steam Village about 10 minutes from germansweek....thats a place for tourists and is full of old steam engines and those big things they take to steam fairs!!
Nice walks, well dartmoor obviously.....Park at Prewley (Sourton) & walk to the Fox & Hounds pub & back. Then there is roadford reservoir, another nice walk (in-country,) or meldon reservoir up on the moor is lovely and has stunning views. There is a visitor centre at Princetown but you are getting dangerously near the touristy stuff when you hit that side of the moor :)
If you want the best cream tea in the world, then go to Two bridges hotel in the middle of the moor.
If you like shopping there is quite a good market in tavistock on a friday (the okey one is awful) and an interesting tuesday morning can be had at Hatherleigh market if you want to see some local lifestyle!!!!
If you let me know the sort of thing you actually like, then I may be able to offer more suitable ideas!
