It could be the "tigers Under the bed" stage - whereby they become afraid of things that usually dont bother them . Although i have to say this usually is towards furniture/certain objects/places etc and not people.
Carry on as usual and I'm sure it will pass :)

You say that you hate to take him around people because he's so scared. He needs to be taken around new people and situations daily. You don't want any terrifying encounters or forcing people on the dog....just exposure. When he acts scared, don't coddle or coo at him, as he'll mistake your comforting for reward.

It sounds like he's not had enough socialization. That is the most important thing you can do for a dog. I recommend a puppy kindergarten class, where he has fun, treats and lots of socialization, plus taking him somewhere every day. That is really something that should start from the day you bring your puppy home, being careful until his vaccinations are done. But better late than never. Good luck.

Have you a park or shopping centre with a bench you can get to.  I would just sit quietly on a bench with him beside you and 'watch the world go by'.  Don't push him into anything at this stage, let him get over it in his own way.

Be prepared to ask people nicely not to pet him, you could take a piece of bedding for him to settle down on, I doubt Danes like to sit on cold concrete for long.  Try not to look like a bag lady yourself or you could find people chucking coins at you :D

This is likely to take several trips, starting with less busy times, working up to more people over the coming weeks.  Don't make a issue out of it or a fuss of him, let him think it is a normal way of life.  When you walk him to and from, do it in a business like manner, if he sees you are confident it will pass on to him.

Good Luck

That sounds to me like a combination of those 'tigers' and 'see, I told you bad stuff would happen!'  He was worried about going out and meeting people because it doesn't happen very often - and he was proved right :( (how can you not see a Dane?????????)  As others have suggested - short visits to gradually busier places, always carefully managed so he doesn't get stressed (no being patted by strangers, allow him to retreat behind you if he feels like it - infact I'd encourage it, so he realises he has a safe place to go) but don't fuss and soothe him too much - it doesn't work like that with dogs - be jolly - chat to him about what you're seeing, describe it too him, and he'll pick up on your laid back attitude ;)  Take some food rewards with you, and when he's looking relaxed give him a reward (or use them to take his mind off what's going on..........)
