Fiona, I'm sure most people can understand text talk, I can read and type it no problems but with adults, not so many can, and on the computer alot of people don't like to see it.  I myself is one of them!

Rox :)

BTW it's now not naw
            down not dawn

Just a couple!

Practise, practise, practise!!!

The same way you learn to show/grom dogs!! ;)

Maybe if you have time copy and paste your posts into word and do a spell check on it then copy and paste back into the box on CD

Though this is time consuming and a pain in the bum if you ahven't got all night, Also read thoguh your posts before you send them to check for silly mistakes!  you can be an English teacher to your own work!

That is what I do most of the time, cut and past to word and then bring it back, some people can't spell and there is nothing you can do about it, if you are like me you are ok with numbers but words are just a jumble and get themselves back to front and mixed up, that would not be too bad if you knew it was wrong but most of the time it looks OK.
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 11.04.04 18:13 UTC
Fiona, we all make mistakes. Either because we type too fast or because we can't spell.

Just a thought, but have you ever been tested for dyslexia? (sp?) My oldest daughter was finally diagnosed after she left school :(
- By Anwen [gb] Date 11.04.04 18:39 UTC
Jackie - OK with numbers OMG - I only have to see numbers & I'm 7 years old again & in a blind panic!!!! We can't all be good at everything!

Fiona - you did very well in your post here.  One of the most common mistakes I see you making is with OW words.

You write naw, and haw

The words are NOW and HOW

Besides that you're doing MUCH better!  Well done  for making the effort!

I have to admit, spelling's never been my strong point. Somehow men are usually better at maths, which I enjoy, but poorer at English language. My one (possibly) good point is report writing, which I used to get quite a few to write at work. Trouble is, my love letters have always looked more like reports!! :(

Best wishes, John

Hey Rox, get over this adult thing, I am an adult and yes  I do understand text talk, thats how I communicate mostly, Ooooh just had a thought, maybe getting really old and going into second childhood, Yurgh. Sorry Rox dont take it personally, I just have a wierd sense of humour.

Hi Fiona,

Have just read all your postings and you seem to be doing very well, good work, but dont worry about the odd mistake, just take a look at all of ours!!!.  I qualified in English Lit. yet take a look at some of my postings and you would never believe it, some of my spelling mistakes are embarrasing. Anyway keep up the good work, it will come with time, take it slowly and don't worry too much about it.

hi ice queen.
its ..." i myself AM one of them, not Is one of them.couldn't resist that, lol!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 11.04.04 18:38 UTC
Good for you for trying to improve, Fiona! You're quite right, a lot of people find text-spelling very difficult to understand, and it has been known for people to get refused jobs because of it. Nobody is born able to spell - it's just another skill that needs to be learned and practiced. I'm very impressed you're making the effort - well done!
:)
- By jeanniedean [gb] Date 11.04.04 19:26 UTC
Fiona my friend in her 50s is dyslexic and used to write in any order but since she has had her computer she sticks at nothing. She types the word looks at then changes it till its correct. I really admire her for this. She even does geneology with me now. So stick in there take your time and if you are not sure ask its all about asking and learning
I am sure the less you use text the better the spelling will get.

Hi Fiona
I've read this line with interest - you are wanting to improve your spelling and that is absolutely brilliant!

If you are cutting & pasting in word, why not use the spell checker as well - when you have finished composing your post, click on tools, then click on spelling and grammar - you will then find that wrongly spelled words will be underlined in red, and you will be offered the correct (or alternative) spelling underneath.    Click on that - and there you are - spelling all correct!!!   If you are offered two or three alternatives, I would suggest that you get yourself a little dictionary, and look up the words that are offered, and click on the one that means what you are trying to say.    I know it is time-consuming, but that is the only way to get it right!!!

Many many congratulations to you to admitting to your problem - and wanting to do something about it!

If I can help in any way, please send me a PM

Regards

Margot

WOW Fiona  I have been reading though the past posts and you have made a big improvent, you really need to get your head around it and it can be hard (I used to write all the time in text talk out of habbit, I just made myself do things over and over again and now I can do MOST of my courseworks without text talk!  U's and R's seem to peep in now an again.

Good luck, really hope you get to perfection..... ;)

fiona i can understand you i sometimes do the same like i occasionly will say r you going 2 ,
but thats just because its quicker isent it , with a bit more thought you will put the right words in . it will come to you soon with a bit of effort, what you need to do is just read it a couple of times over , then see where your going wrong :)

Fiona,

Dont worry about it too much, keep practising and you will get there....

Dont be tempted to slip back into text speak, i do it a lot, because i use msn messenger, that and ive got a very bad habit of using 'baby speak' where do things like "spell fings wif an f instead of a th!"

all it is is practice (and im not sure if that should be practise or practice!)

i suspect if i went back to school now, although my typing skills have seriously improved (i can now touch type properly, unlike when i was at school, one finger typing, staring at the keyboard was my level) my spelling and grammar have dropped!

Oh, and my dad cant spell and his grammar is awful, AND he types with one finger, and he has written and edited various books!

I think, though im not sure, that you can make Word recognise the words you frequently mistype, (like, i never use a capital I for i, and i usually mis spell 'the' as 'teh' and 'and' as 'adn').

Hope that helps.

Em

I believe "Practice" is "The doctor's practice" and Practise is "To rehearse". But then again, I could be wrong.

John :)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.04.04 08:40 UTC
Practice: repeated exercise to improve skill; action as opposed to theory; a custom or habit; a doctor's or lawyer's business.

Practise (US practice): do something repeatedly or habitually; perform professional work.
- By f.a.brook [gb] Date 12.04.04 10:37 UTC
hello everyone,
i dont know about that doctor thing :?
the thing i most afraid of is if i slip back into text talk on here like it i am in a rush or something all because i use my phone alot and you dont get alot of room and i also use alot of msn and yahoo messanger.
i am alot better at useing the computer naw and i gess its better than my spelling at times i used to type with one finger.
yes i done text talking because its alot quicker and i didnt think oit was that bigger problem i will never get to  perfection because no one is perfect.
i do use spell check in word but like you say it takes alot of time i gess i will have to look for a little dictionary for beside the computer
well im not to good at maths or english
im sure your letters are fine at least the spellings are correct :)
well i have had to slow dawn a bit to think about the spelling
bye bye for now fiona ;)
- By gina [gb] Date 12.04.04 10:59 UTC
i dont think practise is an English spelling just US. It changes to an 'S' when practice becomes practising. I've never used it anyway although that dont make it right LOL :) :) :)

John any sort of love letter is better than none :p :p :p

Hello! Reading books is a good way to improve spelling :)
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 12.04.04 17:20 UTC
Fiona are you still at school?  If so, could you approach your tutor and ask for a bit of extra help with your literacy?  If you aren't at school you may be able to enrol at a course at your local college - remember the adverts with the gremlins?

Job prospects will be far greater if you have a good grasp of written English and there will be lots of sources of help if you ask for it.  Make an appointment with your Connexions Personal Advisor in your local High Street or at school and discuss it with them, you should find them supportive and helpful.

SaraN is correct, reading will help and so will any kind of writing, but don't be too eager to use Txt Spk, you'll only end up getting yourself confused!

I think its great that you want to improve, definitely the way forward!  Good luck.
- By SaraN [gb] Date 12.04.04 17:33 UTC
Put your mobile on ENGISH DICTIONARY. This will help you spell words and stop using 'text speak' (DONT FORGET you only need to press a letter button once as it will automatically spell a word. Also you need to press * to change a word)

I am a dyslexic and so is my daughter, there are some classic giveaways that appear in most literate dyslexic's work that is those of us who can actually read and write as opposed to youngsters who don't have those skills as yet - althought they too have some classic problems that should set the alarm bells ringing for any parent.

Dyslexic's don't recongise when a word is correct, many used to believe it was the other way round ie they didn't know it was wrong.  It is not unusual to read a piece with many different spellings for simple words throught the page and many educators get frustrated as they can't understand that a child can spell a word correctly once and then wrong every other time it appears in their work!  Many write part of their work backwards, my daughter was doing this for many yrs and still does when she's very tired, they write very little, suffer behavioural problems due to fear, frustration and memory problems mainly.  I knew my youngest had a problem by age 3 when she drew a picture on her grandads yard and all of it was a mirror image of what she wanted to draw and she couldn't make up her mind which hand to use for eating or drawing/writing.

You can get yourself tested with the British Dyslexic's or the British Dyslexic Ass, they can also help with programs that will strenghten your weak area's which show up on their testing, also a good Colour therapy optician can help with glasses that will stop words melting or moving around a page if you have a problem in that area.

For a dyslexic reading a book is both exhausting and punishing many will avoid it like the  plaque they'd rather be smacked than forced to read at school so tend not to volutnarily read anything more than necessary as an adult, coping mechanisms is what help to find new ways of 'getting' the written word, texting is so much easier as it's phonetic.  Don't laugh but most of my dyslexic friends can spell the really long difficult words and get the 3 - 4 letter words totally wrong I do it and still don't understand how!

Hi Fiona

I just want to say how brave you are to come on and ask for help with your spelling difficulties - it would have been so easy for you to give up posting because you were worried that people wouldn't understand your posts, but you've bitten the bullet and are doing something about it :)  Well done, and keep up the good work - as others have said there are improvements that are already noticeable :)

You should be very proud of yourself :D

My oldest daughter (now 22) is only slightly dyslexic. Her problem was compounded because she is also ambidextrous (sp?) :D In other words she can use both hands for writing. You should see her draw - she uses both hands at the same time  I go cross-eyed watching her ;) However, she can't spell at all. She'll turn round and ask me :)

It's only a problem if you let it be one. ;)

wow i didnt expect this many posts :) :)
