Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Sardine cake recipe
- By Moonmaiden Date 11.04.04 12:50 UTC
Just made this cake for my dogs

It's cooling in the garage as they were trying to climb on to the work surface to er test it :D

4 tins sardines or 1 large tin pilchards put into a bowl and mash with a fork.... add 4  eggs, as much garlic or garlic powder as you like. Stir in plain flour to make a consistency that will 'just' about drop off the spoon...put into a greased dish and cook for about 7 minutes in the microwave or cover with a greased paper and pop into the Aga until cooked. Freezes really well and if you get the mixture
right it bounces too.......

& yes it does bounce LOL

Tasting has been done by the dogs & its safely in the freezer

lol dogs have to taste the WHOLE thing!!! ;)  Garlic I love so don't mind that stinking out the house ;)  What is the texture like?  is it the same a liver cake or is it more rubbery?

Mine was like a very heavy sponge(not that I know anything about sponges don't cook won't cook me LOL)Smelling of garlic(I love it too)& sardines(which I hate)the collies were trying to get it whilst it was very hot. Never done a liver cake as I can't touch or face offal

I like the 7 minutes cooking time too LOL

I've done both liver cake and sardine cake.  The sardine cake is much as you describe it, a heavy sponge, the liver cake is more solid.  My dogs love both of them but I prefer handling the liver cake as I hate the smell and taste of sardines but actually love liver.  I always feel that the sardine cake smell lingers much more on my fingers etc but that could be because I hate it so much.  I have some of both in the freezer ready for obedience practice or shows but wouldn't want to use much of either as I don't normally give my dogs grain of any kind.

Have used the Liver cake recipe but instead of liver I use tinned pilchards in tomato sauce or pink salmon.

Thanks in advance.

I'm still trying to get my head round a vegetarian thinking a sardine (fish) is a plant ...
- By liberty Date 11.04.04 23:04 UTC
Honestly JG, have you never seen a summer flowering sardine??? ;)

Very funny(not) Jeangenie The sight of offal makes me physically sick but the fish are covered in sauce & I don't have to handle them to make the cake OK ? & no I do not think the fish are plants

Can no one post anything on this forum without being made fun of or ridiculed ?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.04.04 08:28 UTC
I wasn't trying to be funny! I have come across plenty of people who claim to be vegetarians, yet eat chicken and fish ... and your post reminded me of them, that's all.
:)

I don't eat fish, eggs, cheese or anything that has animal tissue in it

It seems that anyone who isn't a meat eater gets ridculed on here by certain people

I get annoyed by people who feed a "natural"diet because of animal testing then buy their meat from a supermarket where animal welfare is low on the level of concern. My dogs get organic meat from an organic farmer who is soil association registered hence no antibiotics, growth hormones etc in the meat/eggs etc from her. Most chicken producers are interested only in the profit & most chickens are not reared ethically.

I only posted the recipe as it is an alternative to the"liver cake"& easier for people like me to prepare for their dogs. I know I'm not the only one who baulks at the sight of offal

I haven't noticed that vegetarians get ridiculed on here, but then I haven't been looking for it either. Each to their own, as far as I'm concerned. I agree with you about the double standards about a natural diet from intensively-reared meat; that also seems strange to me.

As you say JG each to their own, if some of these animals were not farmed they would not exist. suppose it is up to the individual to decide if extinction is better than being farmed.
- By Moonmaiden Date 12.04.04 13:27 UTC
So you approve of intensive farming ???? animals filled with antibiotics etc that enter the food chain & lead to anti biotic resistant illnesses I'm amazed. If you buy chickens & eggs from intensively farmed animals you condone the trade.

Even the RSPCA & Farm Sure stuff can be the result of unethical treatment of animals, chickens bred to go so quickly their legs cannot support them & they sit/lie in their own urine & get burns on their flesh that has to be grated off so that Joe Public doesn't see it, Pigs that never see the light of day & live in their own manure ?

Then you slag off food companies for testing their feed on animals & take animal tested headache/pain relief tablets Sorry that IS double standards

I have a life threatening illness that the treatment for is being tested on animals Aha I've got double standards you think -sorry no the animal it is tested on is me. Mine is a purely human illness & animal testing would prove nothing so I don't have double standards(no leather shoes either)

Come on everyone - the post was about sardine cakes - do we have to detour to an argument
- By Moonmaiden Date 12.04.04 14:37 UTC
I object to the sarcastic reply re me thinking sardines are flowers

It's me that doesn't eat animals not my dogs
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.04.04 14:53 UTC
It wasn't intended to be sarcastic! :) I was muddled by the line <<being a veggie I can face fish but not liver>>. I (obviously mistakenly) read that to mean that you might be one of the so-called veggies that eat fish - obviously they don't class them as animals, as I find their double-standards baffling. I'm delighted to hear that you are not like that. No offence was intended - if any was taken I apologise.

I think the sardine cake sounds like a great idea, anyway.

I'm sorry Moonmaiden, but where have I said I approve of intensive farming? Where have I slagged off food companies? I really don't see that my post (agreeing with you, actually) deserves such a vitriolic response, but obviously you do. Could you please explain why?
- By Moonmaiden Date 12.04.04 14:35 UTC
I was replying to this "As you say JG each to their own, if some of these animals were not farmed they would not exist. suppose it is up to the individual to decide if extinction is better than being farmed. " & this from a previous reply "..........I would not entertain Iams........... "

Not your good self JeanGenie
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.04.04 14:48 UTC
Ah, that's okay then! It was listed as a reply to my post, not to Jackie's, which is why I was confused. (Incidentally, I personally disapprove strongly of intensive farming, but am also in favour of farming animals for meat, otherwise they would indeed become extinct - nobody would breed them as pets!)
