Hi all - me again,
Well Scooby as you know was diagnosed with IBD 2 weeks ago and was started on steroids and imuran 9 days ago. Supposedly these steroids were going to make a new dog of scooby and he would be puppy like again with untold energy and no vomiting. Well quite the opposite happened. He started the steroids on the Thursday and by Friday was getting depressed. By Saturday he was still eating his meals but was not his usual Labrador self (jumping around all excited) and by Sunday his face had "sunk" all under his eyes, cheeks and top of his head and also around his back legs. Worried I took him to the vets on Monday only to find that my poor dog had lost 2kg of weight in 4 days (still with no vomiting and no diarrhea either). So where did it all go?
After telling the vet that I thought the meds were doing it and initially them saying no it can't be - takes two weeks for meds to start working, when scooby got on the scales they could not put it down to anything else. Since Monday the imuran has been stopped, the steroids reduced to half dose only once per day and although there has been a change in his mood he is still not back to pre-steroid state even though he hasn't vomited since his endoscopy.
Has anyone else had their dogs react to steroids in this way and were there any other meds that do the same thing?
