Hi guys
advice required please!!!
My Staff was due to start her season last week but as of today there is still no sign of it???
She was on her middle week last october 9th so did expect her to be coming into her second week by now on this season but she is not even swelling never mind losing blood!!! Is she doing this because we have the stud booked and waiting ????? (;)) or does this mean she is not going to have her season this time?? please someone tell me whats going on !?!?!?!?!?!
Emma

Emma,
The technical reason for this is ..... she's not in season yet, and she'll come in when she's good and ready :D She obviously hasn't read the same diary as you.

Hiya
(checked out your website and your dogs are beautiful!! (:))
I know, but if you remember you all helped me decide to apply for an affix which we have done, stud dog is booked, eyes checked and certified, boosters done, worming up to date, she is sooo laid back and does not have a clue!! We are all on pins waiting for her to start!
I am right in working out the dates??
Emma

Assuming she has a 6 month cycle, you're about right, if she doesn't you're not LOL. Is this her 3rd season and was she spot on 6 months between the first two?
M.
PS - Thanks, re. website.
she was 9 months old with her first one.

If she was 9 months old with her first one it's quite possible that will be nearer her cycle. I personally wouldn't mate her till her third season anyway.
:)

Bitches very rarely come into season on the dot of 6 months - it is only an average. How many seasons has she had? She will need to have had three before you can be fairly sure of working out her cycle - my own bitches have tended to be roughly a fortnight either side of the 8 months mark.
:)
this will be her second, and is classed as a good breeding age for staffies (have researched and checked with other breeders and KC staff expert), so I was just working it out from the last one, ie. 6 months later.
emma

Ah, then she could be a 6 month-er, 7, 8, once a year ..... you'll just have to wait and see ..... relax, it could be some time yet.
M.

My original Collies used to be 6 months more or less to the day!! Ever since, they're 10/11 months ish, when they're ready. Quite handy really with a long-coated breed, saves having that post-season moult too often - although made it a long wait when my girl 'missed' last time.

ok so what signs will i get for her coming into season? I can't remember her starting her last one, just remember the mess and how bit 'it' was!!, the mess doesn't bother me though i just follow her round with a mop!!
em
should i contact the stud owners and let them know that she is not showing any signs yet? she was provisionally booked anytime after good friday.
Em
Hi my bitch was due in season in october still no sign im not worried it will happpen when shes ready! no telling mother nature im afraid :)
but thats 6 months late ?!?!?!?!?

She'll come into season when she's ready ~ Could be any time in the next few days/weeks/months.
Why the rush?
At 15 months some people would think she is too young to be mated, but obviously that's your choice. :)

A bitch can come into season at anything from every 4 months to every 14 months! The 6 month cycle is in my experience quite unusual and certainly with my Labradors I would put the average at nearer 9 months. In actual fact Anna is the first bitch I have had who cycles at 6 month intervals and even she, now she is getting towards middle age is nearer to 7 months.

My Mia is 3.5 years old and has only had 3 seasons in her life, I'm not worried.
I have to echo the concerns of breeding from a 15 month old bitch, she is only 3 months out of puppyhood. What is the rush, surely waiting another season won't hurt her?
Hi mitzy comes into her cycle every 12months.
Also a puppy is still a puppy until 24months of age that is why you should wait till 3rd or 4th heat cycle before breeding well this is my vets view on things lol.
But you little girl will come into heat when she is ready and not until.

I have to agree with Lily Munster, In my opinion 15 months is too young to be having a litter. :(
If you waited till her 3rd season she would be over 2yrs, which would be a much better age for her to become a mum. :)
On the subject of seasons though, my Staffie bitch tends to come into season every 6 months practically to the day. But they are all different it will happen when it happens.
Just out of curiosity, where's your bitch from (Sire & dam) and what stud dog are you using.
Michelle. Owner of 3 Staffords (or should I have said owned by)
My Bitch is from Stormbull and her Sire is Ecylpstaff Ivanappa and her Dam is Stormbull Secret Harmony. The stud we are using is Stormbull Sparticus (dam's half brother) how was recommended by our breeder, who also breeds on second season.
I had my own concerns about the age, but I have spoken to many Staffie breeders and to the Kennel Club Expert on Staffords Mrs Belfroy and all have said the second season is the norm.
If she has her seasons every 12 months then she will be 21 months old for her second season so the age would be fine then?
I argued all the same points with myself and have decided to listen to the experts in the breed as i am only a beginner, it is not a decision i have taken lightly.
The vet has also checked her and has said she is mature enough and it would be fine.
If she was still only a puppy in herself i would not even consider it.
