I read somewhere on here that coconut oil is good for putting weight on a dog?But after googling it seems that people use it to lose weight,it is less fatty then the other oils?? Does anyone know if it puts weight on,i having been adding a teaspoon to my dogs meal daily for the past 3 days,am i wasting my time, has anyone tried this??

thanks in advance for any help :)

Coconut oil is high in fat and can be easily absorbed by dogs.  It contains saturated fats which can interfere with llinoleic acid, an EFA, if given in excess and is not recommended as it can lead to clogging of the arteries.

Hi Tohme,
Is there an answer to a question that you dont know the answer to? ;)
Are you saying not to give it in excess or not to give it at all? This is the only thing i havnt tried with my girl,i think i have to face the fact that she is just petite,my pup weighs 2 kilo more than her! I suppose i would rather have a lean dog than a rolly polly.

thanks for answering

I am deeply interested in diet and am always trying to learn about ingredients, their effects (both in isolation and combination) on the body and mind.

As I have not seen your dog I have no idea if she needs to put weight on or not.  Everyone has a different "eye" for weight and one persons "ok" is another person's fat or thin :D

If your dog has plenty of energy and has no physical problems why worry, dogs, like humans have their own individual builds, some are built to be skinny and always will be, others, like myself, only have to think about an Easter Egg and inflate :D

AT the end of the day in general, carrying less weight is healthier in the long fun for all species, less strain on the heart and joints.

I personally would not feed coconut oil but that is my personal choice; if you are going to feed it you need to balance the possible benefits? (weight gain) against the possible risks (clogged up arteries etc).  At the end of the day it is your decision based on your analysis of the long term health of your dog.

coconut oil is used in conditioning programs to keep weight on a dog.so the dog really should only be given it if it is involved in a serious work schedule.it is given at 1 tablespoon per day added to food for a 6 week period only building upto a race or whatever.it has now been replaced by many conditioners with flax seed oil.i feel these fat sources should never be used unless the dog is doing heavy workloads.

I agree with you with the caveat that dogs can have issues with flax seed oil which MAY in predisposed dogs, cause the itchies.
