Topic Dog Boards / General / Treats vs Praise

Which method do you use when training your dog to do things? ie house training, do you give the dogs treats everytime or just praise them. The reason i ask is that we started with treats for Leo but if you give them him while hes doing his jobs he stops what hes doing and if you give them after he doesnt seem to know what they are for.. so we decided to just praise instead and he seems to be coming on well, V few accidents in the house in the last few days. But b/f's mum started yelling the other day for us to go and get treats cos he was doing it outside, i did to avoid argument but does it matter how you do it?

All my training for anything uses a mixture of both.  I have haddled dogs in the past that wouldn't eat treats, so it was purly praise, others that wern't interested in food so funny voices and fuss HAD to be used.  I use a mixture just so its interesting for the dog (would get boring with biscuit after biscuit or fuss after fuss!!!!

When my dogs do a wee then it is simply a good boy/girl and a fuss on the head if they are close or on lead!  Mum did start giving them biscuits and now as we walk out the drive, one bitch squats and doesn't do anything trying to get a biscuit, needles to say I'm back to fuss and words!!!!

Both but it depends on what the dog responds to, some do not need anything but a smile and then there are those who will settle for nothing less than the Sunday joint.

I started off using mainly just praise, but after a few accidents i started clicking and treating (as well as praise), so that the treat doesn't have to be given whilst they are going, and so you don't have to be close by. I always held off on the click for a few seconds so that i didn't stop them before they got going!
