Are the electric collars a humane way to train a dog, i have always said that i would never use one.  After talking to a few people about them they say the dog would learn with the siren that you can press will let the dog know that you do not want that to happen.  I have tried the spray collars but this doesnt seem to work.  Tha problem i have is he is a fifthteen month old Bordercollie and all he wants to do is run after every dog he sees. I have put him back on the lead and he goes training twice a week, all the time that i am working him he is fine but the minute i let him in a park then i get so cross because he will not listen to me. another thing that becomes a problem is he will not leave footballs alone i know this is a collie thing to chase but i would also like him to come when i call him and not when he feels like it.  Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Please do not use and electric collar on your dog; have you tried one on yourself?  Even that is no indicator of the sort of pain that might be felt by the dog as they, like us, have differing pain thresholds and a BC is quite a sensitive soul :)

Please try other ways of training your dog for example you could get him fixated on a toy such as a ball on a rope which he only gets outside and will then ignore other dogs.

Also you can attach a long light line around 30ft so that you can tread on it when he starts to bomb off and then reward him heavily on his return.

Food may be less effective with a collie than a toy but this can also be a tool in your box, you may decide to feed him only when out for each recall etc.

There are lots of ways, but none of them are quick and need patience, consistency and showing the dog that you are actually more fun to be with than the dog over the other side of the park.

Electric shock collars are an extremely inhumane way to train a dog.  The fact that the owner punishes a dog when they haven't taught him what is required yet is as cruel as the electric shock itself.

If its classed as humane then maybe we can use them on all the anti social/ trouble causers and  idiots in the world

they gotta learn some way

But Lel - maybe they haven't been taught what is expected from them (or what rewards there may be for 'conforming'??)

Then maybe we should use them on their parents for not teaching them whats expected ;)

If its humane whats the problem :)

The only people that use these things are people that have no idea how to respond to there dog, Just because they are used in America that doesnt mean we have to follow. At 11/2 it is still a baby dont take it to the park /give it it's own football take it to a place where it can be on it's own to run and play football with you.Go and get your self trained then you will beable to train your dog.
