help! my female bordeaux , who was recently in heat, developed stud tail. there is a red patch about 2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide . the hair in that area has partially fallen out. as per my vet, i have been applying salicylic acid, 2% 3-4 times per day for the past 6 days.
my vet says if it does not subside he may have to remove her tail! she was spayed 14 days ago and was in heat at the time. for the last 7 days she has been having her period.
could it be hormonal (as she was just in heat )? will it subside? will it spred? how will I know it is healing? will the hair grow back? will her tail need to be removed? what other medications could i use? how long will it take to heal.
thank you,
chris

I'm sorry, but I'm really confused about what you are saying. Bitches don't have periods! You say that she was spayed 14 days ago, when she was in season. If I understand correctly, you are saying that she is now bleeding from her vagina.
This should not be happening if she has been spayed.

Would a vet spay an in-season bitch? Find the whole thing a bit of a puzzle too, what is stud tail and why would the tail need removing, is it a form of gangrene or something? Anyway reading between the lines if the bitch is spayed and is still bleeding she needs attention and she needs it soon.

This guest's whole post seems very confused to me! Googling for "stud tail" implies that it is primarily a problem in cats, caused by over-secretion of sebum from the scent glands at the base of the tail. It seems to be cured by washing, and is nothing serious.

Seems a bit elaborate to be a WUM but one never knows. Thanks for the info JG thought it was something I had never heard off and sure enough it was, not being into cats it's not surprising.
Have you ever know a vet spay mid-season?

No, never. Far too much risk of haemorrhage, according to my vet.

That's what I thought, can only imagine that it would be under taken in the event of a sever accidental damage to the bitch where death would occur should they not be removed, then it may be worth the risk. Think this must be an early out to school one.
i know of a westie that was spayed mid season, everyone told her owner to wait, butthe vet assured her it was ok to spay mid season and as it was the vets that the kennels also used the owner (one of the staff) went ahead, millie was very ill for months afterwards and roughly 6 months after being spayed became very aggressive towards dogs and people and bit one of the owners children and her childrens friends so decided it was best for her to be PTS, after this incident and a few others the kennels changed vets.
It certinally isnot adviseable to have a bitch spayed midseason unless her health/life depends on it being done,
