Ice Queen has the standard height as being 23-24 inches for dogs and 22-23 for bitches. The present standard is maximum height for dogs 24 inches and bitches 22.
WhenI first started in flatcoats many years ago, the breed height standard was rather different from today. The height standard was for an ideal height for dogs of 24.5 inches at the shoulder and bitches 22.5 inches with judges allowing a two inch leeway either side. Dr. Laughton said that flatcoats varied in size according to the area they were working. Flatcoats both dogs and especially bitches were bigger back then. I first saw flatcoats in 1974 where I was living in Norfolk. Then I became interested in the breed although never owned a pedigree flatcoat until later, I remember seeing them at the CLA game fair, all big working dogs.
I have been told by a very respected judge of the breed that she and Pat Chapman measured Shargleam Blackcap and he was well over the current standard, at 25.75 inches! The AKC standard, for the breed height, is much closer to the standard previously used in this country than the one we now use.
Some breeders still breed the larger version, and I know one who will always say, "If you have an ............. You will have a big dog".
