Why can't you say anything to a non doggy person, so far i've had "oh my God why did you spend £450 on a dog?" -- Well because thats how much they cost? "I'd never spend that much on a stupid animal" and other comments like that.
And you can't even say anything like oh he's into everything without some sarky response of "well what did you expect?"
Do other people get comments like that all the time or is it just the people i know?

It is my experience that ANYONE and EVERYONE often fails to appreciate another persons *quirks* :D :D I cannot for the life of me see how ANYONE can spend thousands of pounds on cars or bikes or stamps or ...or....or ....
:D :D :D

Hi there, I totally agree with what you're saying. Im getting the same thing. Im getting a dachshund puppy in May and when people ask me how much? I tell them £500 and there like 'what, £500 for a dog' and they look at me like im totally off my head but your right thats how much they cost. Some people are just not dog people, they just dont get it. The best thing to do is to ignore their comments. Its not about the money spent thats important, its all the years to come with the new addition.
Kat
all the years to come... yes i then got "you know its going to cost you a lot more in the years to come" other than yelling shut up i feel like yelling "it's He, not it"
Mind you the guy who said that then said he hated his dog when he had it and he can't wait until his cat dies, so he wont be going ANYWHERE near little Leo

Well the one thing we know that they dont is all the enjoyment were going to get. Everything costs money but there are things in life that are more important then price tags. The poor cat, this person obviously shouldnt have pets. There are lots of people like that about. Just ignore them. Oh...dont let him near your dog.

If you have a good specimen of a breed and you intend showing then you've got to spend a lot as the saying goes 'you get what you pay for'.
If you pay little or get an animal 'Free to a good home' the vet bills are going to more than make up for it. Vet bills are gong to be the same whether your dog is a pedigree or a mongerel regardless of how much or little you pay.
My dogs give me so much enjoyment especially during the day when all my family are out, hubby in work, kiddies in school, they really cheer me up and keep me going. When the kids come home from school and they start playing with the dogs aswell it's chaos but really good fun :)
Who cares how much you pay, if you've got the money go for it.

We are getting lots of comments at the moment as we spent £700 on our pup. We do intend to show her so it true, you get what you pay for. Obviously no-one can guarantee show quality puppies but your more likely to get one if you purchase a quality dog.
We too get the, "what did you expect" comments when I mention that Penny has chewed this or that!
That man sounds awful, its a shame someone can't take the cat off him and give it a good home. :(

I have given up answering the 'How much was he?' question :D :D I just say 'Enough'
:p :p
my dogs are worth every penny i have spent on them,i go to work so as i can have them,i dont smoke or drink and i dont enjoy clubs or places like that, i do enjoy eating out now and again, i didn't tell my hubby the whole truth when i bought my westie(he does know now what i paid for her), we dont have holidays abroad,i drive an R reg estate, and i have a comfortable home, what more could i want, i get great pleasure when i buy things for my dogs, my family think i am mad, perhaps i am.

simple arguement
"what you spent £100 on those jeans/shoes/coat!!!!"

People can be converted though you know :D My OH was horrified at first at the prices for puppies, but now he has become slightly obsessed with a particular breed and doesn't even ask about the cost :o He's even passing opinions on what they look like! This from a man who's interest ended after finding out if it had 4 legs......:D

Do you all also get the remarks when you say you are getting another one? "For heaven's sake, what do you want three of them for!!!" Then they ask how much it will be and that leads on to the "fancy spending all that on a pup, blah blah!!" People just don't understand :(

oh yes i am getting all those remarks just now between how much are you paying???!!! what £550!! for a dog worse than daft!! yes but the people saying it happily pay out £80 a time to get their hair done every 6 weeks!!! and every night out they have they have to buy a new outfit ,new shoes, and get their hair and nails done!! whos the 1 wasting the money erm not me !! lol oh and the second 1 your getting another 1!! why on earth do you want another MUTT!! yip thats my families favourite word to describe my babies, they dont get that although i love my 2 kids 2 bits my dogs are also a very major part of my life and they always will be!! families who have them lol
Michelle

Tell me about it! We are bring in a pup from America on the pets passport and all I get is you could have had a new car, you could have a conservatory why spend all that money when you could do with a good holiday, yes my car is old as is my van what do I want a conservatory for because I will not be at home to enjoy it because I will be away showing my dog, and no I will not miss a good holiday because I will be away in the caravan with my dogs showing so by getting the pup I have achieved all three of the things that my family think that I need, and no I could not tell them how much she has cost because I am to scared to add it up
All this negativity from non animal people is why I dont talk pets with them! :)
Ah well, you've got to feel sorry for them really, they may never know just what they are missing!! (Loss of sleep, chewed shoes, slobbered and muddy clothes, walking in the pouring rain, mud everywhere, picking up poo... hang on a minute, what are they missing?! ;-)

I kept secret the price I am paying for new puppy (£800) from my mum but sis told her and she said I must have more money than sense. But I love this breed, my friend has three, and I want to 'show' and join in the fun and chat. I only talk 'dog' to my friend cos I see other peoples eyes roll up whenever I mention anything to do with dogs! They just can't get their heads round the price and think its all a big fuss over 'nothing'. Also they say 'one dog is enough what do you want another one for?'
Dee
I don't really talk dog thats the thing, its people who knew we were getting a puppy who have decided i need to hear their view on the dog........OH's mum was particularly annoyed "what? you paid that much" "how will you afford to eat" "you better not buy it toys, it can have old toilet rolls" and her favourite "oh dear and a dog too, it will pee up all the furiture, you should always have bitches"
Given shes never had a Dog before, only bitches and even then as puppies, she may have to learn that leo is far too small to cock his leg, he would fall over so he would have a job doing it on the furniture lol
I'm also getting sick of everyone on earth saying "oh so we will see you at crufts then" despite the fact they know that Leo is a pet and not for showing and you can't make any comments at all to them without getting what do you expect back.
We were prepared for the chewing and peeing etc but even so hes my first puppy so i find it quite amusing just how much he does get into and how devious he can be, im not complaining, just saying but they don't understand!
Anyway Rant over lol i needed that

I've forked out a small fortune over the last year on my lot. I took all eight of my guinea pigs to Cambridge to see a specialist (4 hour drive), because the local vets were useless with them. All because i love them dearly.
Mind i don't believe it's always true, saying you get what you pay for. Out of my three dogs, the one i paid the most for has been the most expensive (he came from a top breeder), and the one i got 'free' has been the 'cheapest'.

Snoopy,
But the one you got free hates Norman! That shows exceptional bad breeding :D :D :D Still, wait til he's fit. DING DING DING Round two! :)
After paying £600 for my beautiful boy it was said by someone I know (but not to my face I might add) "Thats disgusting! How could she when there are so many rescue dogs waiting for homes! Blah blah blah" Well for the record I have never had a dog before so thought it best to get one someone else hadn't ruined. (I know this isn't always the case). I always rescue my cats cos I mostly know what i'm doing with them so can be sure they will be happy with me and I with them. Just wait til I see her!

Like you I didn't tell anyone how much I paid for my bully. All my family have dogs, but they have retreivers from a friend who breeds and can't understand why I want a different breed. My mum would have a fit if she knew I'd paid 800 even though I show her. Its just not worth the hassle!! I don't see that money is an issue for a good example of a breed you love. Sam.
 Non Doggy People
My pensionable aged parents, of sound mind and health

haven't spoken to myself and my husband since November of last year......the week we told them we were picking up our basset. We are officially "A pair of pratts".....Oh really, sorry.....who did you say was a pratt?????

Say no more.....

LOL, this thread is funny. i get the same with non horsy people too - i've not come across non doggy people before! each to their own perhaps, but i eprsonally think that animal people are better rounded in general than people who have never learnt to love and care for a different species. Just My Opinion.:)
